Craving a good cuppa joe, some dessert, or a hearty brunch across the causeway? From glasshouses to neon-lit shophouses, here are the best JB cafes to check out this year that will definitely hit the spot!
Cafes could mean different things to various individuals. It could serve as a meeting point for catchups over cake, a pit stop to rush out that overdue assignment before class — or if you’re lucky enough, an air-conditioned oasis where you can cosy up with a book. Either way, cafe-hopping has inevitably become a national pastime for us Singaporeans trying to beat the rising temperatures outdoors. Even before the pandemic, we’ve seen this collective hobby transcend boundaries to establishments in Melbourne, Bali, and, finally, the other side of the causeway. If you’ve got some time on your hands on your next trip to Johor Bahru, why not check out some of these best JB cafes?

1. Good Morning Food Truck (早尚好)

Breakfast in Taiwan is a big deal! But since we can’t enjoy quarantine-free travel there just yet, why not take a short 30-minute drive from Woodlands Checkpoint to Good Morning Food Truck instead? But take note, the food isn’t actually being served from a food truck. These delicious no-frills sandwiches are doled out from the confines of a quaint cafe in Taman Ekoflora.
Go straight for their kimchi pork egg toast or their popular cheese ham egg option — and wash it all down with an icy glass of homemade soy milk.
Price: From RM8.90 (~S$2.80)
Address: Jalan Ekoflora 1, Taman Ekoflora, Johor Bahru 81100
Opening Hours: Tuesday to Sunday 7 am to 3 pm, Closed on Mondays

2. Kaffeinted.Fish

This one’s got my vote for the most aesthetic option on the list. Picture a tall glasshouse shrouded in greenery, away from the hustle and bustle of Johor Bahru. Combine that with gorgeous cups of hand-brewed coffee and an abundance of cats — and you’ve got yourself a winner. Come for their cheesy hashbrown omelette sandwich, but don’t leave without trying their matcha latte.
Price: From RM10 (~S$3.20)
Address: 2, Jalan Roda 2, 81300 Skudai, Johor, Malaysia
Opening Hours: Friday to Wednesday 10 am to 5 pm, Closed on Thursdays

3. Kiöpi

On the market for something a little less commercial and a lot more personable? Kiöpi is probably your best bet. Set in a country house about an hour away from the causeway, this cafe is a favourite amongst road trippers and families. Start with the spaghetti bolognese, but save some space for any one of their delectable desserts. Think waffles piled high with fruit and vanilla ice cream, tiramisu, as well as Nutella-drizzled caramel lattes. Yum!
Price: From RM9 (~S$2.90)
Address: Homestay Hajah Aminah, No. 47, Kampung Serkat Barat, 82300, Johor, Malaysia
Opening Hours: Friday to Wednesday 12 pm to 7 pm, Closed on Thursdays

4. Uncle Jabb’s Place

In need of a mid-afternoon pick-me-up? Make sure to give Uncle Jabb’s Place a visit if you’re near the Pontian area. It is about an hour away from the causeway, but the cafe more than makes up for it with its unique selection of milkshakes, cakes and desserts. If you’re in the mood for something a little more hearty, you’ll be glad to know that Uncle Jabb serves up a mean bowl of mutton soup — spices, herbs, and well wishes included.
Price: From RM8 (~S$2.50)

5. Mrs Who

Probably the most reviewed option on the list, this crowd-pleaser is no stranger to the cafe scene. Come early to secure your spot because it’s a popular destination for brunch lovers all over town. Favourites include their chicken waffles, the golden cheese sandwich, any one of their pasta dishes, and their exquisite service. End it all on a sweet note with a glass of their iced chocolate and you’re golden.

6. Merah Kitchen & Bar

Reminiscent of Kuala Lumpur’s famous cocktail bar PS150, Merah Kitchen & Bar eludes the same eclectic energy whilst strategically catering to a younger crowd. There are a ton of board games, video games and card games here to help you while away the hours — as well as a myriad of finger foods and alcohol to keep you going. When in doubt, you can’t go wrong with an icy pint of beer and a bucket of fried chicken.

Last but certainly not least, Haru Coffee is a cosy Korean cafe nestled in Taman Adda Heights serving up rave-worthy scrambled eggs (some say the best in town!) and great coffee. Other must-haves include their genmaicha tofu cheesecake, hojicha latte, americano with coconut water, and strangely enough, the corn dog.
