Wondering how much to put in your wedding ang bao this year? You’re not alone. Between rising banquet costs and venues that quote everything before tax, working out the “right” amount can feel harder than picking an outfit.
Wedding invites tend to arrive slowly, then all at once. One month it’s one close friend. The next, your calendar and your bank account are both fully booked.
And most guests still worry about the same thing on the day itself: did I give enough?
Here’s the short answer. Your ang bao should roughly cover what the couple paid for your seat, then a little more if you’re close to them. This guide works out the cost-per-seat for 115 Singapore venues, split by weekday and weekend, lunch and dinner.

Wedding Ang Bao Rates 2026: At a Glance
If you only remember one thing, make it this: weekday lunch is the cheapest slot to attend, and weekend dinner is the most expensive. At the same hotel, the gap is usually about S$20 to S$50 per person, though it stretches past S$100 at a handful of premium venues.

Luxury venues sit above these bands, running from about S$300 to S$780 per person. If your invite is for a five-star ballroom or a Sentosa resort, look it up in the tier tables rather than using the ranges above.
A quick note on how we calculate this. We take each venue’s banquet package price, divide it by the standard table of ten, and work from a figure that already includes the 10% service charge and 9% GST. That’s what the couple actually pays, so it’s what your ang bao should cover.

How to Work Out Your Ang Bao Amount
Step 1: Start With What Your Seat Costs
Find the venue in the tier tables below and read across to your timing. That number is your baseline, and it already covers service charge and GST.
If the venue isn’t listed, use the tier ranges as a guide. A five-star hotel ballroom sits around S$300 and up. A restaurant or country club usually lands between S$150 and S$200.
Step 2: Adjust for How Close You Are
The baseline covers your seat. What you add on top is the actual gift.
- Colleagues and acquaintances: the baseline is fine. No one expects more.
- Friends: baseline, or S$20 to S$50 above if you want to.
- Close friends: S$50 to S$100 above the venue rate.
- Immediate family: S$200 to S$500 above, though family traditions vary a lot here.
If money’s tight, give the baseline and don’t think twice about it. A sincere card matters more than the number, and nobody at a wedding is auditing envelopes.
Step 3: Add for Your Plus-One
If you’re bringing someone, double it. Two seats, two portions of the banquet bill.
At a S$200 venue, that means S$400 for the two of you. This is the single most common mistake guests make, because the invite goes to one person but the couple pays for both chairs.
Step 4: Round to an Auspicious Number
Chinese weddings follow number conventions, and they’re easy to get right.
- Avoid any amount with a 4 in it. In Mandarin and most dialects, “four” sounds like “death”. Skip S$40, S$140, S$240 and S$400.
- Aim for amounts ending in 8, which sounds like “prosperity”. Amounts ending in 6 are lucky too.
- Use even numbers. The Chinese saying is that good things come in pairs.
Popular landing spots: S$88, S$168, S$188, S$268, S$288 and S$388. So if your baseline works out to S$240, give S$268 instead. If it’s S$300, S$288 or S$388, both read better than the round number.
Ang Bao Rates by Venue Tier
Here’s every venue we track, grouped into five tiers by what a seat actually costs. Jump to your tier:
- Luxury Hotels & Resorts: typically S$300 and up
- Premium Hotels: typically S$250 to S$300
- Mid-Range Hotels: typically S$200 to S$250
- Restaurants, Clubs & Value Hotels: typically S$150 to S$200
- Void Decks, Community Clubs & Budget Venues: typically S$50 to S$120
All rates are per person and include service charge and GST. Where a venue shows a range, it reflects different packages or ballrooms at the same address.
Luxury Hotels & Resorts
Singapore’s top end, where a single seat can cost more than a weekend away. These venues price per person rather than per table, and the gap between the cheapest and priciest package is wide.
What to give: S$300 and up, and closer to S$400 at Raffles Sentosa, Capella and The Singapore Edition. The Barracks Hotel Sentosa sits alone at the top of the list, at S$780 for dinner.
If the invite says Capella, Raffles or Sentosa Cove, budget properly. Turning up with S$200 at a S$400 seat is the one scenario where the number genuinely gets noticed.

A dash means the venue doesn’t run that slot. Some spaces here are booked on a minimum spend rather than per table, so the per-guest figure shifts with headcount. Gardens by the Bay works this way too, which is why it isn’t in the table.
Premium Hotels
The five-star city hotels most Singapore banquets actually happen in. Think Orchard Road ballrooms, Marina Bay views, and the Sentosa resorts a step below the luxury tier.
What to give: S$250 to S$300, leaning to the top of that for a Saturday dinner.
Weekend dinner is where these venues charge their premium, so check the timing on your invite before you decide.

Chinese restaurants, country clubs and recreation clubs. Smaller rooms, shorter menus, and noticeably kinder on everyone’s wallet.
What to give: S$150 to S$200. Ban Heng at Orchid Country Club starts at S$90 for a weekday lunch, which is about as affordable as a sit-down banquet gets.

Void Decks, Community Clubs & Budget Venues
Not every wedding is a hotel ballroom, and the rates change completely when it isn’t. Void deck and community club receptions are usually buffet or catered, and the cost per guest is a fraction of a banquet.
What to give:
- Void deck or HDB function room: S$50 to S$100. Catering typically runs S$20 to S$40 per head.
- Community club or clan hall: S$80 to S$120.
- Buffet reception at a small venue: S$80 to S$150.
Give at the top of the range if you’re close to the couple. The seat costs less, but the gift still counts.

Church, Malay and Indian Weddings
Not every invite comes with a ten-course banquet, and the hotel rates above don’t transfer. Here’s what changes.
Church Weddings
The question is simply whether there’s a meal, and how big it is.
- Ceremony or solemnisation only: S$50 to S$80. There’s no banquet seat to cover, so this is purely a gift.
- Light buffet or café reception: S$80 to S$120, depending on how substantial the spread is.
- Church ceremony plus a full banquet later: use the venue rate from the tables above, then add S$30 to S$60 for attending both.
Malay Weddings
Malay weddings, or kenduri, work on completely different numbers. Most are buffet-style at void decks, community halls or mosques, so the cost per guest is far lower than a Chinese banquet.
- Friends and colleagues: S$20 to S$50 per person.
- Close friends and relatives: S$50 to S$100.
The cash is called duit salam, and it’s handed over in person with both hands rather than dropped in a box. Plenty of modern weddings now have a collection point at the reception table instead, so follow whatever’s set up on the day.
Indian Weddings
There’s no fixed rate, and customs shift a lot depending on whether the family is Tamil, Punjabi, Sikh, Malayalee, Telugu or Gujarati.
- Temple ceremony, community hall or smaller reception: S$80 to S$150 per person.
- Hotel reception: S$150 to S$300 per person, in line with the venue tiers above.
Cash in a decorative envelope is the norm. Immediate family and close relatives usually give well above these ranges.
ROM and Solemnisation Only
If you’re invited to the registry signing and nothing else, S$50 to S$80 is plenty. Many couples don’t expect anything at all for a ROM, especially if the banquet is coming later and you’re invited to that too.
Ang Bao for Bridesmaids, Groomsmen and Helpers
This one’s for the couple, not the guests. If you’re getting married, you’re the one handing out envelopes on the day.
- Bridesmaids and groomsmen: S$48 to S$150 each, depending on their duties and whether you’ve already paid for their outfits.
- Emcee: S$48 to S$68.
- Ushers: S$18 to S$28 each.
- Flower girls and page boys: S$28 to S$48 each, usually a token.
- Banquet manager: around S$38.
- Photographer, videographer and makeup artist: S$38 to S$68 each if they’re paid vendors, or S$108 to S$208 if they’re friends or relatives doing it for you.
- Gatecrash ang bao: no standard rate, and it’s the one number that’s genuinely negotiated on the day. The bridesmaids traditionally split whatever’s handed over.
None of this is standardised. Give what you’re comfortable with, and weight it towards the people putting in the most hours.
