“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. These words by Charles Dickens may have been crafted back in 1859, but they still ring true today — absolutely no one wants to relive the chaos of 2020 and 2021. Yet, for some of us lucky ones, these pandemic-stricken years have brought us closer to our loved ones and taught us the value of every waking moment. While Dickens wrote that with the French revolution in mind, today, we’ll not be discussing the faraway lands of London and Paris (because we already have). Rather, we’ll be spotlighting our beloved neighbours across the border. Scroll down for the latest entry requirements to Malaysia.

🇲🇾 Best Day Trips From KL
In need of some fresh air after a night of street food and drinks? Take a ride out of the city and explore new territories.
Genting Highlands
Genting Highlands is a strange place that seems to morph as you grow older. When I was a kid, it was a place of fast food and theme parks. Touching twenty, it became an indie music festival ground. At the same time, older folks would often head over for a good gamble session. Whatever your reason for heading to higher ground, the cheapest way over is by bus and cablecar. Bus tickets (RM 5) can be purchased at KL Sentral. The bus will drop you off at Awana Bus Terminal, which is where the cable cars (RM 9) are located too. It’s literally all uphill from there.
Admission: Free

Dragon Back Trek
By far the best thing I’ve ever done in Kuala Lumpur was to scramble and trek up a crystal quartz ridge 30 mins from the city known as the Dragon’s Back. As you ascend through the forest, the trees gently part to unveil stunning views of the lakes and mountains on one side, and the city on the other. Just be warned that the journey is about 6 hours long and you will sweat buckets. Fortunately, it includes a delicious breakfast that awaits you when you’re done.
Guided Tour: S$72.80

Rock Climbing at Batu Caves
There are a ton of great climbing gyms in KL but why go indoors when you can do it outdoors on natural limestone? Three hours long, this excursion is great for both beginners and experienced climbers. Don’t worry about bringing anything, you’ll be provided with the equipment you need including chalk bags! The price includes a ride to Batu Caves Temple post-climb.
Admission: S$59.50
