Understanding QR Code Immigration Clearance
Starting from 19 March 2024, travellers departing Singapore by car at the Singapore-Malaysia border via land checkpoints will be able to use the QR Code Immigration Clearance. It’s a system introduced by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) of Singapore to streamline immigration processes at land checkpoints. This innovative solution allows travellers to clear immigration by scanning a QR code generated through the SG Arrival Card or MyICA mobile app. Given the significant traffic jams at land checkpoints, all methods of speeding up the immigration process are warmly welcomed by many Singaporeans and Malaysians.
⚠️ First-time visitors will need to present their passports for immigration clearance but will be allowed to use QR codes on subsequent trips.
⚠️ Travellers will still need to present their passports at Malaysia’s checkpoints.

Travellers must download the MyICA mobile application to generate the QR codes. In a shared vehicle, all occupants can either use a shared QR code or generate individual ones.
A maximum of 10 travellers‘ passport details can be consolidated into a single group QR code. Each group code can be stored and named within the application.
For individuals travelling with different groups of people, there’s also an alternative to generate multiple QR codes.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use QR code for immigration clearance on your MyICA App:
How do you generate a QR code in MyICA?
1️⃣ Install the MyICA app. Download and install the MyICA app from the App Store or Google Play Store.
2️⃣ Look for the QR Code icon
3️⃣ Choose ‘My QR Code’ for a personal QR code or ‘Group QR Code’ if you’re registering in a group. A Group QR Code can store a minimum of 2 passport profiles up to a maximum of 10.
4️⃣ Fill in the necessary details such as passport details into the app.
👉 Singapore residents, including citizens, permanent residents, and long-term pass holders, can automatically fill in their passport details via Singpass when accessing the MyICA app.
👉 Alternatively, you can utilise the app’s camera feature to scan the machine-readable portion of your passport’s biodata page, typically found at the bottom of the page.
❗ Note: Foreign visitors who have previously visited Singapore can also use the camera function to scan their passport’s biodata pages to automatically fill up their passport information.
For individuals who are visiting Singapore for the first time or are re-entering the country with a different passport, you will still need to present your physical passport for immigration clearance. However, once the initial clearance is completed, you can make use of the QR code system for streamlined processing at immigration checkpoints for your subsequent trips back into Singapore.
Moreover, travellers have the option to bypass the QR code altogether and present their physical passport directly for immigration clearance if they prefer.
5️⃣ To add another traveller, press the ‘Add Profile’ button. On this page, you can also swipe left to delete or edit each profile.
6️⃣ After adding all your profiles, press the ‘QR Code Homepage’ to view all QR codes.
7️⃣ To modify or edit the group QR code, press the 3 vertical dot menu on the right of the respective group profile. This can be helpful when anyone’s passport expiry is drawing near, a red exclamation mark will indicate that and you can modify a member’s passport details with the above method.
8️⃣ After confirming all the details are accurate, click ‘Generate QR Code’
9️⃣ Scan the generated QR Code at the designated checkpoint scanners.

Validity of QR Codes:
Individual codes are valid for a duration of one year from the time it is generated or until the expiry date of your passport, whichever comes first. Group QR codes have a validity period of one year from their creation date or until the earliest passport expiry date among the individuals within the group, depending on which event occurs first.

How does it work?
At the vehicle counters, travellers can scan their QR code saved within the MyICA app at both the arrival and departure car counters at Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints.
Upon scanning the QR code, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers will proceed with face-to-face verification of travellers, using the information retrieved from the QR code.
Those travelling in a group must use the group QR code which includes all the passport information of all individuals travelling in the same vehicle.
If any details and number of individuals do not match with the QR code, the vehicle will be rejected at entry or exit.

As stated by ICA, the QR code clearance will allow travellers to enjoy a faster and more convenient experience. With this initiative, estimated time savings are approximately 20 seconds for vehicles carrying four passengers and up to a minute for those with 10 passengers. Moreover, ICA mentioned that if a majority of vehicle travellers opt for QR code clearance, overall waiting times could be reduced by over 30%!
Despite the implementation of the QR code system, travellers retain the option to present their physical passports to ICA officers at the counter. Additionally, ICA has plans to gradually expand the QR code clearance to other clearance zones at the land checkpoints, with further details to be disclosed in the future.
❗️ As a precaution, travellers should still bring their passports along when travelling back to Singapore from Malaysia or vice versa.

❗️ Tips for Travellers: Malaysia money changers now require you to share personal details
Previously, only those who change foreign currency worth RM3,000 (~S$851.14) and above in Malaysia, must provide their full name, identification card number, and date of birth.
