From earthy English countryside-inspired looks, to edgier knight-inspired outfits — here’s the rundown on five popular ‘core’ aesthetic trends, plus where to get the looks on ZALORA, SHEIN and Taobao.
The late Kenzo Takada once said: “Fashion is like eating, you shouldn’t stick to the same menu.” And if you’re a fashion junkie — or anything close to it — then chances are, you’re always looking for new looks to try. You may have also come across the whole range of ‘core’ aesthetics that has gained popularity in the past year or so with the rise of TikTok. If you haven’t, it is essentially a trend of centring one’s style around a specific feature. One subgenre, in particular, Cottagecore, has emerged as the most popular of the series. But what exactly is it, and what other core styles are there for us to explore? Read on to find out!
Cottagecore
This aesthetic (also known as Farmcore and Countrycore), which emerged in the 2010s, was inspired by the Western agricultural and cottage life, centred on ideas of simple living and harmony with nature. Think: the English countryside from back in the 1800s, a period where the domestic lifestyle took centre stage — along with nature and comfort.
In today’s times, following the onset of the pandemic, you would have seen this theme expand beyond fashion and explode all over social media, with activities that have picked up popularity over the year — baking, sewing, handicrafts, gardening, and picnics among others.
Were you part of the Animal Crossing trend too? That is also a form of Cottagecore!
Key colours of Cottagecore: Green, brown, yellow, and cream/off-white
Cabincore
Cosy sweaters, denim jackets, flannel tops; jeans, corduroys, overalls — these styles are the main building blocks of the Cabincore aesthetic. That, and boots of all kinds.
While similar to Cottagecore, Cabincore presents a more laid back feel. As the name suggests, it romanticises the cabin life — a rustic, snuggly one. One that reminds you of hot coffee on a foggy Sunday morning or an evening snuggled up with a comfy read and Taylor Swift’s new folk album.
Key colours of Cabincore: Deep browns, auburn. Darker shades of red, maroon, burgundy, etc. All shades of green, white, and burnt orange.
Knightcore
Inspired by medieval knights, Knightcore is a common aesthetic spotted on Tumblr. It is the most measured one of the lot and requires quite a bit of thought to ensure historical accuracy. It is also considered generally less comfortable than the other ‘core’ aesthetics — and definitely not something you’d want to slap on every day. Rather, it is more suited for formal occasions and is often seen in art and cosplay.
No guesses here — it involves crowns, leather, rings, metal armour, vests, and gloves amongst a range of accessories.

Key colours of Knightcore: Silver, brown, red, royal blue, and dark green.
Mosscore
This aesthetic focuses on objects and clothing that relate to, well, moss, as well as forests. It is almost never associated with light or bright colours — and is themed around dark natural shades of greens and browns.
This aesthetic is best paired with activities such as gathering wild fruit; journaling; reading old books, and bird watching, along with any activity related to observing or creating things with or in quiet nature.
Key colours of Mosscore: Mid to dark greens, dark browns.
Angelcore
A contemporary take of the ‘core’ aesthetics, Angelcore is inspired by imagery and depictions of angels. Do note that there need not be any religious undertone to this aesthetic, despite its name.
When spotting the Angelcore style — lookout for visuals such as pink, glitter, butterfly designs, flower designs, earrings with wings, gold ornaments, images of the sky, and hearts!
Key colours of Angelcore: White, gold, light blue, light yellow, and light pink.
