Best Animated Netflix Movies & Series: Be Transported To Another World
It may be easy to gloss over-animated shows in favour of other options but that would mean missing out on tons of amazing films! Unlike popular belief, ‘cartoons’ aren’t just for children. In fact, some of these animations available on Netflix Singapore are heavy with adult themes — so proceed with caution when screening them with the little ones around.
Arcane

Credits: Netflix Singapore
Why We Recommend: Fans of League of Legends can rejoice, now that the highly anticipated Arcane series is expected to premiere globally on 7 November — additional episodes will be released weekly thereafter. The show is said to be focused on two relationships: the first between two sisters (Vi and Jinx) who share a difficult childhood, as well as the conflict between the cities of Piltover and Zaun.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal The Movie

Credits: Netflix Singapore
Why We Recommend: The future may be marked by stark uncertainty, but at least there are nostalgic childhood remakes we can look forward to! Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal The Movie comes in two parts that we can expect to premiere globally on June 3. Editor-in-Chief of Naoko Takeuchi’s comic Fumio Osano couldn’t have put it better: “Amidst these challenging times, it is our greatest pleasure for viewers to feel courage and hope by watching this story about love and justice.”.

Love, Death + Robots (Volume 2)

Credits: Netflix Singapore
Why We Recommend: I’m cheating a little with this one — but since each episode of Love, Death and Robots is short and standalone, I’m including it in this category. This collection of dystopian animated thrillers is meant to trigger you, or least spark conversation on hard-to-deal-with topics. There’s one on killer home cleaning appliances, a childless utopia and even aliens in tall grass.
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 88%
Movie Duration: ~15 minutes
The Breadwinner
Credits: Netflix Singapore
Why We Recommend: Of course, there are animated films that are great for both the young and old. The Breadwinner is a tough but important watch that highlights the challenges of an 11-year-old girl living in Taliban-governed Afghanistan who uses her abilities in storytelling to find strength in the midst of turmoil.

Big Fish & Begonia
Credits: Netflix Singapore
Why We Recommend: This film was the brainchild of Chinese directors Liang Xuan and Zhang Chun who managed to turn their short film into a full feature thanks to crowdfunding. If you’re a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender or The Legend of Korra, you’ll love this little-mermaid-esque tale that follows a girl from a mystical realm who transforms into a dolphin to explore the human world. There, she meets a young man — of course, trouble soon ensues.

If Anything Happens I Love You
Credits: Netflix Singapore
Why We Recommend: Is it truly better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all? This 2021 Oscar Nominee may just be a short 12-minute animation, but what it lacks in length it more than makes up for in feels. This emotional tale about the resilience of the human spirit follows two parents as they struggle to pick up the pieces after a tragic event changes their lives forever.

Best Horror Netflix Movies & Series To Get The Chills
I hold horror movies near and dear to my heart because they have a way of drawing out emotions that no other genre is capable of doing. While there’s a time and place for cheap jump scares and senseless storylines — we’re here for the chill-inducing slow-burners that’ll haunt you long after the credits roll.
The Sandman

Credits: Indiewire
Why We Recommend: As a huge fan of Neil Gaiman, when I first heard that his celebrated comic books would soon be coming to live onscreen — I was ecstatic. If you’ve not read the series, the Sandman is basically about Morpheus who lives in a realm called The Dreaming. He is the “living personification of dreams” and his job is to tend to the REM state of being all over the universe. The TV series begins with his capture which leads to his eventual escape and the steps he needs to take to put his kingdom back together. You’ll meet humans, gods and terrors too dark to speak of.

The Lighthouse

Credits: Rotten Tomatoes
Why We Recommend: If you’re in the mood for plain madness and claustrophobic chaos — The Lighthouse is for you. It features superb acting by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson (if you’ve had trouble watching his movies before for fear of Twilight flashbacks, this will definitely fix that), but also a tension built-up like no other. Expect a slow burn horror flick with layers of thick sea-sickening dread that only breaks apart at times for unexpected moments of comedy. Airs on Netflix 3 November.

IT Chapter 2

Credits: Heaven of Horror
Why We Recommend: Everyone’s favourite clown returns to fuel our collective childhood nightmares for the second time in IT Chapter 2. Following the defeat by the kids in the Losers’ Club, Pennywise lies in wait for another 27 years to terrorize the town of Derry, Maine, once again. When people start disappearing, the gang return for another battle with the clown — and their own personal fears. Airs on Netflix 1 November.

The Swarm

Credits: Heaven of Horror
Why We Recommend: While the critic and audience score vastly differs on this one, fans of creature features and/or Alfred Hitchcock might love this one — think Birds, but replace all those flapping wings for clouds of grasshoppers. Set on a farm in the south of France, this horror thriller addresses familial relationships, financial stress as well as…well, vampire insects.

FEAR STREET Trilogy

Credits: Capitalfm
Why We Recommend: Based on R.L Stine’s horror novels (no, not Goosebumps), the Fear Street trilogy is set to be released throughout the month of July. The series pulls key elements from the books and crafts a whole new tale — drawing from iconic horror influences such as Scream, Halloween, Friday the 13th and more! Fear Street Part 1:1994 is out now, but stay tuned for Part 2 and Part 3 that will be released on 9 July and 16 July respectively.
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 87%
Movie Duration: 1 Hour 45 Minutes
Orphan

Credits: Netflix Singapore
Why We Recommend: Coming out on 1 June is this oldie but goodie. Released back in 2009, Orphan is an unsettling tale with an unexpected twist. While critics didn’t appreciate it as much as the audience did, many praised it for its originality and good cast performances. If you weren’t a fan of children before, you might be slightly terrified of them after.
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 63%
Movie Duration: 2 Hours 3 Minutes
The Woman in the Window

Credits: Netflix Singapore
Watch, if you must: This movie didn’t garner the best reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Based on the New York Times Bestseller of the same name by A.J. Finn, the tale follows a psychologist confined to her home by agoraphobia. She becomes a spectator to the new neighbours who move in in an opposing block and unintentionally solves a crime that takes place. While many have lamented the lost of a brilliant twist present in the novel that the filmmakers had chose to leave out — the true thrilling twists lies in The New Yorker’s exposé of the life of the novelist himself.

The Witch
Credits: Netflix Singapore
Why We Recommend: Before Anya Taylor-Joy mastered the game of chess, she played the role of a fervent Puritan in Robert Eggers’ atmospheric masterpiece The VVitch (No, it’s not a typo.) The movie forces viewers to address uncomfortable issues surrounding the ideals of religion, family, loss and grief. Coupled with a killer soundtrack and claustrophobic visuals, this movie is a well-rounded, painstaking experience to behold. Tip: Watch it with subs on unless you’re great with Early Modern English and/or are used to conversing in King James’ speak.
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 90%
Movie Duration: 1 Hour 32 Minutes
The Ritual
Credits: Netflix Singapore
Why We Recommend: Fans of Norse mythology, this next one’s for you. The Ritual follows a bunch of college friends into the depths of the Scandinavian wilderness. In a bid to fulfil the travel wishlist of a friend they lost in a tragic incident, they powered through the forest despite their better judgment. There, they are forced to deal with leftover anger, guilt and bitterness.

The Platform
Credits: Netflix Singapore
Why We Recommend: Probably one of the all-time best Netflix originals, Spanish dystopian thriller The Platform addresses what true horror is. Not ghouls nor vampires, but human greed and selfishness. The movie begins with the protagonist waking up in a cell-like room, and he isn’t alone. There’s both a cellmate as well as a giant hole in the middle. A platform with food is sent down every day to feed everyone in the tower through the hole, but here’s the catch: you’re at the mercy of the everyone else above you. And every month, you get shuffled. One day you could be at level one…and the next, you could be right at the bottom.

Best Romantic Comedy Netflix Movies: If You’re In The Mood For Love
It was Rotten Tomatoes who aptly pointed out the unique catch-22 that rom-coms had — “they are both beloved by their fans and often despised by jaded critics who review them”. And it’s not hard to understand why, especially in today’s context. There’s nothing quite like a good modern-day fairytale to help you escape reality — and boy, do we need that!
My Fair Lady

Credit: Hollywood Reporter
Why We Recommend: This one’s a musical from the 60s but before you keep scrolling — wait! I’d admit that I’m being completely biased when I say that My Fair Lady is probably one of the best comedies I’ve ever seen, but it’s definitely not unwarranted. This award-winning musical is a cult-classic that boasts an elegant, stage play elegant, magnificent acting, as well as a beautiful accompanying score with a ton of tongue-in-cheek lines dripping with delightful sarcasm. And of course, there’s Audrey Hepburn. What’s not to love?

Get Smart

Credit: Rotten Tomatoes
Why We Recommend: Okay this one’s not exactly a rom-com, but *SPOILER ALERT* there is definitely some unexpected romance in this hilarious movie remake of the class spy series. Either way, you cannot go wrong with their star-studded cast — including funny guy Steve Carrell, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Terry Crews, and the gorgeous Anne Hathaway.

Little Women (2019)

Credit: IndieWire
Why We Recommend: Even if you’ve never read the book, there’s Emma Watson, Florence Pugh and Saoirse Ronan in this movie — what’s not to like? The movie follows four sisters in the aftermath of the Civil War, all of whom are figuring out life and love in 1860s New England. Watch this one for incredible chemistry between the actors, breathtaking visuals and of course, gorgeous outfits.

Never Have I Ever (Season 2)

Credit: OtakuKart
Why We Recommend: If you’ve yet to catch up on season 1, now’s the time to do so before season 2 gets released on 15 July. This one’s a coming-of-age comedy that follows Indian American teenager Devi through the very relatable struggles of family, high school drama and, of course, love. You’re guaranteed a good laugh and definitely a tear or two.

Charlie’s Angels (2019)

Credit: Screen Rant
Why We Recommend: Wondering which movies to screen at your next girl’s night on Netflix Party? Why not do both the 2000 version and 2019 version of Charlie’s Angels? What both films lack in layer or depth, they pretty much make up for with two hours each of non-stop girl-power action — we think it’s pretty worth it.
Who runs the world? Girls.

Miss Congeniality

Credit: Screen Rant
Why We Recommend: One of the OG rom-coms of the noughties, Miss Congeniality is the perfect movie to curl up to with a pint of ice cream and a face mask. It’s not just pleasant and entertaining, but cheeky enough to take an irreverent stance against the otherwise revered pageant industry. Shallow as it is, the movie assures girls that it’s okay to be a kick-ass FBI agent and wear six inch heels at the same time.
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 69%
Movie Duration: 1 Hour 32 Minutes
Someone Great
Credit: Netflix Singapore
Why We Recommend: If you’re a fan of Gina Rodriguez be sure to add Someone Great to your watch list. This modern-day chick flick is realistic, albeit slightly glamorized, representation of the 21-st century. It follows Jenny’s last adventure in NYC with her two best friends before she moves to San Francisco to get started on her dream job. There’s dancing and dress up — but, for the most part, it focuses on the tension between love, friendship and adulthood.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
Credits: Netflix Singapore
Why We Recommend: Of course no cryfest is complete without one of Netflix’s latest feel-good rom-com. When it comes to young love and childhood sweethearts, don’t sleep on To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. Remember passing notes in class to your friends about your crush only to have it confiscated and read out loud? Well, take that and then times the mortifying horror by ten and you’ll feel Lara Jean Covey’s pain. While the story in itself might not seem groundbreaking, it still proves to be a thoroughly enjoyable and refreshing watch.

Always Be My Maybe
Credits: Netflix Singapore
Why We Recommend: Ah yes, nappy buddies reuniting and finding out they were always meant to be together all this time. Or not. The sweet-and-funny Always Be My Maybe takes the age-old winning rom-com formula and serves it up with a twist, and a punchline — courtesy of Randall Park and Ali Wong. Also, Keanu Reeves is in it. Need I say more?
