Planning your next getaway to the other land down under, but not sure where to start? From breathtaking fjords to quirky exhibitions, discover the wonders of New Zealand with our comprehensive list of must-dos that’ll show you how to live, eat and play like a local!
Whenever we talk about bucket lists and epic adventures, our minds often wander to places like the bustling streets of India, the charming cobblestone walkways of Italy, or the nature wonderland that is the United States. However, there’s a hidden gem that’s tucked away in the southern hemisphere: New Zealand. With more than 700 islands to its name, you’d be able to find anything and everything your heart desires — from the stunning cityscapes to rich culture, and of course, untamed wilderness in all shapes and forms.
But with so much going on, you may be wondering how and where to start; after all, within New Zealand, you may find yourself struggling to choose between a visit to the North or South Islands. So to help you guys out, we’ve put together a list of 15 bucket list-worthy places and things to do sorted according to the respective islands. All you need to do is to book that flight, pack your bags, and set off!
North vs. South Island — Which Should I Visit?
Generally speaking, if you’re on the lookout for a cultural trip with a good mix of city life and nature, then the North Island (a.k.a. Auckland and Wellington) might be your best bet. There, you get to immerse yourself in the Maori culture, hit up gorgeous geothermal spots, and of course, paint the town red in its vibrant cities.
But if you prefer taking the off-the-beaten track and would like to experience all that nature has to offer, then the South Island would be a perfect choice. From rugged landscapes to mist-cloaked fjords, the South Island is a treasure trove of marvels just waiting to be uncovered and can be accessed through major cities like Christchurch and Queenstown.
Must-Visit Spots On The North Island
1. Waimangu Volcanic Valley, Rotorua

As the world’s youngest geothermal valley, Waimangu is a unique geographical landscape that formed as a direct result of the 1886 Mount Tarawera eruption. It’s currently home to a variety of unique craters, geysers, hot springs, and wildlife. Take a self-guided walking tour to explore the various systems like the Inferno Crater or the Mt. Haszard Trail, and end off by the tranquil Lake Rotomahana.
Once you’re done at the Waimangu Valley, don’t forget to take some time to explore the rest of Rotorua — explore a variety of sparkling lakes and gorgeous forests, and of course, immerse yourself in the Maori culture.

Expect more than 20 abstract cultures on this 1000-acre plot of land, which have been designed to complement the environment and landscape. Oh, and do note that while the farm is open to public, it’s only for one day out of a month!

Did you actually visit New Zealand if you didn’t check out Hobbiton, a.k.a. the lush pasture where the spirit of the Shire lives on? If you’re not sure what we’re referring to, it’s where the epic Lord Of The Rings Trilogy was filmed, and where all our favourite hobbits reside.
Don’t forget to book a guided tour — while you can drive up to Hobbiton on your own, embarking on your own adventure will not be possible, so plan ahead to avoid disappointment!

4. Tindalls Bay, Whangaparaoa

You’ve probably seen images of glowing, neon-blue shores — those are a result of bioluminescence plankton, otherwise known as the aurora of the sea, and for good reason! Equal parts surreal and breathtaking, being on the beach during the algae bloom can feel like you’re in Pandora, the world of Avatar. If Tindalls Bay is out of the way, fret not — as long as you’re along the Whangaparaoa Peninsular, you’d most likely be able to spot a glimpse of this gorgeous phenomenon.

Bring a shovel and get comfy — as its name suggests, the Hot Water Beach is where you can dig your very own natural hot pool. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the Pacific Ocean situated just metres away from where you decide to set up camp!
Wonder how on Earth this works? Well, because New Zealand sits on a geothermal fault line, it means that geothermal springs are aplenty. Our recommendation: pack a comfy swimsuit, bring your favorite snacks and bask in the best of what nature has to offer!

Be sure to make a reservation at this degustation restaurant — seats at this establishment need to be booked weeks in advance.

A trip to New Zealand is not complete without doing the Hokey Pokey! And by that, we mean having a scoop of the nation’s sweetest treasure — think rich and creamy vanilla ice cream mixed generously with delicious honeycomb toffee morsels.
And while you’re likely to find this at nearly every convenience store or ice cream shop on the island, we love Giapo Gelato for its curious yet artisanal range of flavors and concepts. Think selfie ice cream cones, squid-shaped ice cream, and donuts and brookies in some of the most sinfully delightful flavors.

No this isn’t a typo — a trip up to this fence will literally present hundreds of bras in all sizes and colours undulating in the wind. This curious movement began in 1999, and today, it has become a tourist hotspot for its peculiarity! Despite its kooky beginnings, the movement has evolved into something more meaningful. In 2015, the Bra Fence was rebranded to become Bradrona and has raised more than $30,000 for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. So if you find yourself in the area, don’t forget to stop for a quick photo op and make a donation or two to this worthy cause.
