Why it’s a ‘plane’ movie: The lead actors are cute, their chemistry is great, and there is a dramatic and engaging storyline to follow — but it’s not exactly comedy gold.
However, it’s still a pretty enjoyable way to pass the two hours. Without spoiling the movie too much — the story follows loan officer Ina who ironically falls into debt after an ex-boyfriend cons her of all her savings. As fate would have it, she crosses paths with a cunning con artist but instead of turning him in, she comes up with an elaborate plot to get her money back from her ex. Indeed, hell hath no fury like a woman conned.

2. Love Hard (2021)

Why it’s a ‘plane’ movie: The storyline is really cliche and can get cringe-y at times.
But Jimmy O. Yang is a huge redeeming factor that makes the movie worth a watch. I especially loved when he changed the lyrics to “Baby It’s Cold Outside”. It’s also commendable that they were attempting to make the story relevant to modern-day internet romances — although it does play into a lot of stereotypes. Essentially the plot follows a magazine columnist who goes on bad dates for a living. That is until she swipes upon the man of her dreams and flies across the country to surprise him for Christmas.

3. Eat Pray Love (2010)

Why it’s a ‘plane’ movie: If you’ve read the book like I did, it’s only natural to get disappointed when you realise the film doesn’t hold a candle to it.
However, and movie critic George Fenwick says it best, “sometimes you need a bad film of exactly this ilk: frothy, silly and as pleasurable as wrapping yourself in a warm blanket”. Julia Roberts play Liz Gilbert who thought she had everything she wanted in life: a home, a husband and a successful career. When things suddenly come crashing down, she embarks on a quest of self-discovery through Italy, Indonesia, and India, to find out what truly matters to her. If anything, it’ll definitely get you excited for your upcoming adventure!

Why it’s a ‘plane’ movie: Contrary to popular belief, I think this movie rocks. It is, however, what you’d call a classic chick flick — so if you’d like to indulge without judgement, here’s your chance.
Many would mock the movie’s predictable script and poor premise. Yet, I am of the notion that those components are what makes a great chick flick — and there’s no shame in that, especially when you’ve got Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson as your co-leads. The movie follows advice columnist Andie Anderson who tries pushing the boundaries of what she can write about in her new piece. She meets executive Ben Berry whose confidence, in his romantic prowess, makes him the toughest yet perfect candidate for an editorial experiment.

5. Army Daze (1996)

Why it’s a ‘plane’ movie: Unfortunately, people don’t make time to watch local films as much as they should. This movie is a hidden gem and I can’t recommend it enough!
Even though it was released in 1996, Army Daze has aged surprisingly well — even in 2021. The move is unabashedly goofy, authentic, and successfully portrays racial harmony in a way that many other local films have tried but failed to achieve. The story follows a group of 18-year-old Singaporeans as they enter the National Service, coming from different classes and cultural backgrounds but united by the curveballs thrown at them during the first three months of the Basic Military Training.

Played by none other than Barbra Streisand, Fanny Brice is a famed comedienne who rose to fame as a Ziegfeld girl in the early 1900s. Expect luscious costumes, heart-pounding romance, laughter and a whole lot of singing in this colourful musical that’s an absolute must-watch!

Why it’s a ‘plane’ movie: Stand-up comedy isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But there are days when a little laughter is all you need to get you through a strenuous flight.
Gabriel Iglesias is a great gateway comedian if you’re looking to enter the world of stand-up. He isn’t afraid to offend — but more often than not, his good-natured humour will have you laughing at yourself and nodding in agreement with his apt reenactments of day-to-day occurrences. He also does amazing impressions of people, cars, and everything in between.

Why it’s a ‘plane’ movie: There are certain movies that require just a single viewing to be seared into your memory forever — and then there are films that you enjoy watching, but promptly forget about the moment it ends. This is one of those films.
The premise is simple enough to follow so don’t worry about getting lost in the plot — the world’s top bodyguard must accompany a hitman and get him safely to his trial at the International Criminal Court. Of course, along the way, trouble ensues. What you’re here for, however, is Samuel L Jackson and Ryan Reynolds’ on-screen chemistry and slapstick one-liners peppered throughout the movie. Oh, and the action of course.
