Outdoor enthusiasts from all walks of life cheered in delight earlier this year when Prime Minister Jacinda Arden finally announced the scrapping of New Zealand’s strict border controls that have been in place since March 2020. And so, since 2 May, travellers from countries and territories that have visa-free arrangements with New Zealand have been allowed to enter the country without the need to self-isolate or quarantine — just simply self-test on arrival. If you, too, are keen to explore Middle Earth, here’s all you need to know about the entry requirements to New Zealand. Scroll down for the full deets!
🇳🇿 Entry Requirements To New Zealand: For Fully Vaccinated Travellers
To note: If you have recently recovered from COVID-19, you will still need to provide a current valid pre-departure test within 48 hours of departure. Your medical practitioner will need to provide (A) a medical certificate with the date of your previous positive test and (B) documentation stating that they consider you as no longer being infectious with COVID-19.
🚨 Children under 2 years of age are exempt from pre-departure tests.

🇳🇿 Do You Need To Wear Masks When In New Zealand?
All of New Zealand is at Orange right now. This means, yes you need to wear masks when indoors in public spaces — including public transport, shopping malls, museums, libraries, clinics, etc.
Masks have to be attached to the face by loops around the ears or head. This means people can no longer use scarves, bandannas or t-shirts as face coverings. Learn more here.
🇳🇿 What Happens If You Test Positive in New Zealand?

You will be required to isolate for seven days and take a PCR test thereafter. Find the nearest COVID-19 testing centre here. The government recommends that you tell the health professional that you have recently arrived in New Zealand because the PCR test sample will provide valuable information about potential new variants coming into New Zealand.
🇳🇿 Can You Enter New Zealand If You Are Unvaccinated?

Unfortunately, if you are a non-New Zealand citizen who does not meet the vaccination requirements, you will not be able to enter New Zealand. Unless you have an exemption — meaning you have proof that you cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons. In this case, you will need electronic or paper evidence from a certified health practitioner. And you will still need to meet all other entry requirements to enter New Zealand, including any pre-departure testing and testing on arrival requirements.
