Spotting green spikes, bright white-yellow gooeyness, and a smell that’s hard to forget? That’s right, it’s durian season! If you’re looking to chow down on some quality durian in the Pearl of the Orient, look no further than this guide for the best Penang durian stalls to indulge yourself in!
With an abundance of durians found in Malaysia, true fans of the ‘King of Fruits’ would know that durian farms in Penang serve some of the best. Having over 200 different registered varieties, you can find durians of all tastes and sizes from your usual Mao Shan Wang to the more unique Black Thorn!
When it comes to durians, the most popular type has to be the Musang King (D197). Known to most as Mao Shan Wang (MSW), the variant has a rich intense flavour with just the right amount of creaminess and a pleasant aroma. Prices for this variant can be rather intense due to its popularity, ranging from RM 30 to RM 56 per kilogram during non-peak seasons.
On the other hand, Golden Phoenix (D198) durians are a great alternative to the MSW. Typically available in small sizes, the Golden Phoenix has a slightly pale yellow flesh colour and a strong bold taste. The best thing about this variant is that it has really small seeds and a significantly higher yield than the MSW, helping you get the best bang for your buck if you’re ever up for a durian feast.
Seeking more variety? Red Prawn durians (D175) are extremely popular in Penang for their unique and authentic taste. Originating from the area, this spiky variation has a light pinkish flesh and a really sweet flavour profile — perfect for beginners. However, do take note that Red Prawns tend to end up really bitter when the weather’s extremely hot.
With such a wide range to get your hands (or mouth) on, read on for our guide to the best Penang durian stalls to check out!
