Western Australia Road Trip: Outback’s Wool Wagon Pathway

Set off on an Australian outback adventure exploring canyons, dazzling wildflowers, and majestic whale sharks across Mullewa, Gascoyne Junction, and Exmouth!

Teeming with breathtaking flora and fauna through amazing landscapes and scenic drives, here are some of the most unforgettable experiences the epic 10-day Wool Wagon Pathway trail has to offer!

Best time: April to September (wildflowers from July)
Duration: 6 to 10 days
Vehicle: 4WD

1. Perth to Geraldton

From Perth, take the Great Indian Ocean Drive to the coastal city of Geraldton. 🦘 Enjoy windsurfing activities, visit the HMAS Sydney II Memorial, or simply relax on one of Geraldton’s idyllic beaches known for their beautiful Indian Ocean sunsets!

2. Geraldton to Pindar and Murchison

Just an hour drive away from Geraldton, Mullewa is famous for its wildflowers as the place transforms into a beautiful, dreamy landscape during Spring. While you head towards Pindar, the landscape turns into vast desert lands up till Murchison. 🦘

Don’t forget to stop along tourist sites Bumbinyoo Flats, Greenrough River and Historic Fence too! If you’re up for a challenge, pop by Wooleen Station for wholesome working farm stay, before hitting the road to Gascoyne Junction.

3. Murchison to Gascoyne Junction

🦘 At Gascoyne Junction, you’ll be awed by the massive Kennedy Range National Park which boasts some of Western’s Australia’s most picturesque cliffs and canyons. The national park is also home to many native flora and fauna of Australia.

From Gascoyne Junction, you can continue your Wool Wagon Pathway to Carnarvon. Alternatively, you can also extend your trail to Mount Augustus, the biggest rock on Earth! After taking in the spectacular views of Western Australia’s outback, head back down to the trail towards Carnarvon again.

4. Gascoyne Junction to Carnarvon and Exmouth

On your way to Carnarvon from Gascoyne Junction, explore the region’s history and heritage with a visit to Gascoyne Aboriginal Heritage and Cultural Centre, as well as the Carnarvon Heritage Precinct!

Take a detour by 4WD to Quobba, Red Bluff, 3 Mile Camp, and Gnaraloo to experience the southern end of Ningaloo Reef, a World Heritage Site where you can observe stunning crystalline waters and majestic whale sharks from March to July. 🦘

5. Back to Perth via Coral Bay

The Wool Wagon Pathway Coral Bay

From Exmouth, you can opt to drop off your hired vehicle and take a direct flight back to Perth in just two and a half hours. 🦘

Alternatively, you can retrace your tracks back to Perth in a 2-day journey. Stop by for an overnight stay at the small town of Coral Bay en route, where there are also plenty of astounding marine life and beaches for you to discover!
