7-Day Switzerland Itinerary:

Day 1: Zurich to St Moritz

On your first day, arrive in Zurich, stretch your legs for a little and get ready for a 4-hour journey by train to St. Moritz. St. Moritz is a world-famous ski resort town in the Swiss Alps with a bunch of winter sports and other activities and amenities to keep you entertained. BTW, this town also hosted the Winter Olympics twice. So you know their winter sports facilities are top-tier quality. 

We recommend going to St Moritz by train which is a journey with two transfers.

🚂 How to get from Zurich Airport to St Moritz:

Step 1: Take a train from Zurich Airport to Zurich main station (Zürich HB). This takes about 10 minutes and costs around 7 Swiss francs. You can choose from different trains, such as the IC3, IC5, IR13, IR15, or IR75.

Step 2: Take a train from Zurich main station to Chur. This takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes and costs around 30 Swiss francs. You can choose from different trains, such as the IC1, IC3, IC5, or IR13.

Step 3: Take a train from Chur to St Moritz. This takes about 2 hours and costs around 25 Swiss francs. You can choose from different trains, such as the RE1 or RE32. This is the most scenic part of the journey, as you will travel along the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes

Day 3: Travel to Zermatt via the Glacier Express

Nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Zermatt is a charming mountain village renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and iconic Matterhorn peak that looms overhead. This car-free haven offers an enchanting blend of Alpine traditions and outdoor adventures, promising visitors an unforgettable Swiss experience.

However, to get here from St Moritz requires a long train ride that pretty much takes your entire day away. Hence, Day 3 is mostly dedicated to travelling. The fastest way to get to Zermatt by St Moritz is by car which takes about 5 hours. The next fastest is a combination of multiple trains and a bus including at least five transfers that will take about over 6 to 7 hours.

With these in consideration, we recommend taking the Glacier Express because while it is one of the slowest routes, it is one of the most scenic and comfortable and takes about 8 hours. But rest assured the journey is an adventure in itself as you traverse some of Switzerland’s most spectacular landscapes, on one of the most scenic railway routes in Switzerland, the panoramic train —  the Glacier Express.

To journey from St. Moritz to Zermatt, take a train ride on the Glacier Express, one of Switzerland’s most renowned scenic railway routes connecting these two places — passing through Chur, Andermatt and Brig along the way. 

For winter, the train departs from St Moritz in the morning, around 8 to 9 AM, and arrives at Zermatt in the evening around 5 to 6 PM. Refer to the Glacier Express timetable for more accurate timings. 

If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, the Glacier Express is covered but you need to pay fees to reserve your seat. Without a Swiss Travel Pass, the prices are as follows for one person, from St Moritz to Zermatt:

• 1st Class: 272 CHF (~S$412.75)
• 2nd Class: 159 CHF (~S$241.30)

Once you’ve arrived at Zermatt, check into your hotel, explore the city on foot, and have dinner at one of the charming restaurants in town.

Day 4: Zermatt

Zermatt is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The top attraction here is undoubtedly the Matterhorn, which beckons climbers and photographers alike. The Matterhorn is an iconic mountain in the Pennine Alps on the border between Switzerland and Italy. It is one of the highest peaks in the Alps, with an elevation of 4,478m. You can see why it is a popular destination for tourists and mountaineers alike. 

One of the most popular attractions at the Matterhorn is the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. It’s an alpine wonderland of ski slopes, panoramic vistas, ice carvings, and a view platform to see the unique view of the Matterhorn. 

To get there, you will need to ride a series of cable cars to the highest station in Europe and get panoramic views over the Alps. If you are interested in hiking, there are many trails around the Matterhorn that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The Gornergrat trail is one such trail that offers stunning views of the Matterhorn and other peaks in the region. 

If skiing is your thing, then you will be happy to know that there are many ski resorts around the Matterhorn that offer excellent skiing opportunities as well.

Or if you’re looking for a more leisurely day, you can descend after viewing the panoramic Alps and then move on to explore the charming village with its artisan shops and cosy cafes. Day 5: Grindelwald

Travel to Grindelwald, a village in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. It’s a charming alpine village surrounded by some of the most majestic and highest mountains in Switzerland, such as the Eiger, the Mönch, and the Jungfrau. It’s a great place for sightseeing and adventure sports alike.

🚂 Getting to Grindelwald from Zermatt:

To make the journey from Zermatt to Grindelwald, you can head to the Rail Europe website and book your train in advance. The journey takes approximately 3 hours with the first train leaving at 5:37 AM.

Upon arrival in Grindelwald, hiking enthusiasts can explore the endless trails that lead to stunning viewpoints, with the Jungfrau Region offering some of the most striking vistas in the Swiss Alps. We recommend following these activities in Grindelwald:

1️⃣ Take a cable car up to Grindelwald-First — a mountain pass with stunning views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains. This 25-minute gondola journey passes through Bort and Schreckfeld and offers you scenic views of the surroundings.

2️⃣ Lake Bachalpsee — From Grindel-First, hike to the gorgeous alpine Lake Bachalpsee . It is an easy 3-km hike that can take around 1 hour each way. Get to see snow-capped mountains with green fields in the foreground. If you’re lucky you might even get to see the idyllic landscape reflected against the water’s surface on a clear day. Lake Bachalpsee is a definite must-see for any Grindelwald visit.

3️⃣ First Cliff Walk by Tissot — a suspended lookout platform perched 45 metres away from the edge of the mountain. Situated at the summit of First Mountain, 2200m above sea level, it is an easy walk that takes about 15 to 20 minutes. This is also a must-see!

4️⃣ Grindelwald Village — the main hub of activities with restaurants and shops. To get back down to Grindelwald Village, you can either take the cable car again or choose something more fun like zipline via the ZipRider,  mountain carts or trotti bike scooters! The mountain carts are like “a cross between a go-kart and sled” while the Trottibike Scooters are like a cross between a scooter and bicycle.
