If you didn’t know, eating out in Perth can get incredibly expensive – a cheeseburger meal with fries and milkshake costs about S$20. It’s okay to splurge on restaurants meals once in a while, but for most days, you probably want to go easy on your wallet while travelling.
That’s when you can rely on Woolworths, Coles, or any supermarket under the Independent Grocers Association (IGA) for cheap, ready-to-eat food. Here’s a list of supermarket food you can enjoy for less than S$15 in Perth:
1. Wraps & Sandwiches from S$3.70
It’s early morning and you’ve got a many places to cover in Perth. Chances are, you won’t have a lot of time to sit by and have a leisurely (and potentially expensive) breakfast.
What better way to have a meal on the move than to have a sandwich? Depending on which supermarket is nearest to you, Coles or Woolworths can provide you with scrumptious and relatively cheap sandwiches. These range from A$4 (S$3.70) to A$7 (S$6.50).
For an extra A$1 (S$0.90), you can also get yourself a wrap with fancy Peri Peri Chicken fillings at A$8 (S$7.40).
2. Rotisserie Food from S$3.70
If sandwiches and wraps leave you a little cold, grab something hot from the rotisserie section! Chicken fingers, nuggets, and pre-cut chicken parts range from A$4 (S$3.70) to A$6 (S$5.60).
For the big eater, you can also get yourself a country-style roast whole chicken for A$10 (S$9.30). You gotta be quick though, because it’s always sold out by afternoon!
3. Assorted Salads from S$3.70
Feeling that low-fat, low-carb life and just want to graze on some greens? Supermarkets in Perth have plenty of salads for you to choose from. Woolworths, Coles, and other IGAs mostly have pre-packed salads for you to buy but if you happen to stumble upon centrally-located supermarkets, there are fresh salads available too.
Pre-packed salads with individual portions start form A$4 (S$3.70), while family portions that serve four start from A$6 (S$5.60). Fresh salads are equally affordable around A$4 (S$3.70) too, but they don’t usually come in family portions.
4. Ready-to-Eat Meals from S$4.50
There’s a dizzying array of ready-to-eat meals available in Perth’s supermarkets and they’re usually a little more expensive, starting from A$7 (S$6.50).
If you’re lucky, you can also spot those on clearance, like the Bolognese Bake going for only A$4.90 (S$4.50). For vegetarians, try the closed aisle fridges to find interesting plant-based meat options like Meatballs & Mash or Stroganoff for A$10 (S$9.30)!
5. Café & Bakery Food from S$0.90
It’s late afternoon and you could use a little pick-me-up. Most Woolworths and Coles supermarkets have a bakery section filled with sweets and pastry for a sugar boost, but only handful of them have a café.
There’s one at Coles Central in Raine Square; convenient enough for you to get a cuppa without spending a bomb because it’s only A$1 (S$0.90)! Cheap sweets usually go for A$3 (S$2.80) for singles, while the double deals are more worth it at A$5 (S$4.60~), similar to Woolworths.
6. Fresh Food Lines from S$8.80
That’s right, some IGA supermarkets even have a “buffet style” food line – perfect for those looking for a heavy meal. This particular IGA supermarket is in Leederville and it’s just one stop away from Perth Underground Station via the Joondalup line.
Prices vary according to the container size: a medium tub costs A$9.49 (S$8.80), while a large tub costs A$13.49 (S$12.50). The food variety changes every week, but you can expect a good mix of western and asian dishes.
Think chicken tikka masala, curry chicken, hot beef casserole, mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, creamy tortellini pasta bake, cottage pie, potato wedges, and the list goes on! Your only limitation is that if it can fit into the tub. 😎
