After 40 years of being tucked away from the world’s economy, the city has been busy playing catch up after its reopening in the 1990s. It’s been 31 years since, and Hanoi has more than made up for the time lost. Think skyscrapers and four-wheeled vehicles — all the while retaining its battle scars like tattoos stamped on the layers of French and Chinese architecture all around the city.
