2. Stargaze at Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve

Located in the heart of the South Island, the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve is one of the best places in the world to stargaze. The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve is a stretch of land spanning 4,367 square km, comprising of Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park and the Mackenzie Basin of Aotearoa New Zealand’s South Island.

3. Franz Josef Glacier

The Franz Josef Glacier, Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere, is one of the most popular attractions on the South Island, and for good reason. This glacier is a natural wonder that you can see for free and is one of the world’s most accessible glaciers. Fun fact, most glaciers move at an average speed of around 50 cm to one metre per day, Franz Josef Glacier has been known to move at up to 4 metres per day, making it one of the fastest-moving glaciers in the world.
Located in Westland Tai Puitini National Park the park is free to enter. You can walk up to the base of the glacier and take in the breathtaking views. Just be sure to wear sturdy shoes and dress warmly, as it can get chilly.
