Japan recently announced plans to launch a Digital Nomad Visa program, opening its doors to remote workers from around the globe in February 2024. The visa will be available to nationals of 49 countries, including Singapore, and will allow them to stay and work remotely from anywhere in Japan for up to six months with their families.
✅ Eligibility:
To qualify for the visa, applicants will need to:
- earn a minimum income of ¥10 million (~S$89,240) per year,
- have private health insurance, and
- demonstrate that they do not intend to engage in any activities that would affect the public order or morals of Japan — probably through a criminal record check.
❗ Some things to note: The visa will not grant them a residence card, and will expire after six months without the possibility of renewal or extension. It must be reapplied for within six months after leaving the country.

The visa, officially known as the F-1-D Workation Visa, allows foreigners to stay and work remotely in South Korea for up to two years, with 1 year being the standard and a potential extra year of extension. This visa allows applicants to move together with their spouses and children.
✅ Eligibility:
For Singaporeans to be eligible for the visa, applicants must have:
- a valid passport,
- proof of employment remotely from a Singapore-based company
- have a minimum income of 84.96 million Korean won (~S$85,849) per year
- have valid international health insurance of up to S$150,000
- a criminal record check
Applicants must submit their documents to the Korean Embassy in their country. It’s also important to note that this visa does not allow applications for jobs in South Korea.

3. Taiwan

Taiwan does not specifically have a digital nomad visa but has a visa that is applicable for digital nomads — the Taiwan Employment Gold Card. It’s a four-in-one card, combining an open-ended work permit, resident visa, alien resident certificate (ARC), and re-entry permit. It allows foreigners to stay and work remotely in Taiwan for one to three years, with the possibility of renewal.

- To apply for the visa, applicants must have a valid passport and work remotely for a foreign company or their own business

6. Croatia

- or a minimum of around €31,000 (~S$45,115) already available in your account if you intend to stay for 12 months

Portugal’s Digital Nomad Visa program under the ‘Remote Work / Digital Nomad Temporary stay visa for the exercise of a professional activity done remotely – “digital nomads”’’, welcomes remote workers to live in the country for up to two years. There are 2 types of visas available for the digital nomad in Portugal:
- Long-term or Residency visa – This visa allows you to stay for an initial four months, but allows application for a two-year residence permit upon arrival in Portugal.
- Temporary Stay Visa – With this visa, you can stay for 12 months in Portugal. You can’t extend this visa or use it to obtain residency, but you can extend it four times.

- However, you will still need to prove that you are earning a minimum monthly income of USD $1,500 (~S$2,016) for adult individuals.
