Down a dark dim alleyway, inside a decrepit phone booth, or up a dingy flight of stairs — these are just some of the places you might have to soldier through when on the hunt for a nightcap in the best hidden bars in the capital of Thailand.
As of 15 March 2022, alcohol sales have been allowed to recommence in Bangkok. While we couldn’t be more excited, we understand that, for now, only shopping centres and event venues have been given the go-ahead. The green light has not yet been extended to bars and entertainment venues unless they have received permission to operate as restaurants. To help you out, further down the list, you’ll find the names of some bars that have yet to be reopened. Keep tabs on this article for the latest update on the best hidden bars in Bangkok.
For now, we will assume that all the bars on this list that have been reopened have indeed been given permission to operate and have been certified through SHA+ and Thai Stop COVID 2 Plus (safety and health standards set by the Thai government to prevent the spread of COVID-19).

2. Havana Social

Heads up: there is no front door or signage here. You will, however, see a white neon sign that says ‘TELEFONO’. Head on into the retro phone booth and dial in the secret code. You might want to call Havana Social in advance for the entry code (alternatively, you may ask the guy in the Cubanos kiosk right outside). A false door in the back of the phone booth will swing open — et voila, you’re in.
Inspired heavily by the prohibition bars of pre-revolution Cuba, the decor here is one for the books. Come for their stunning rum cocktails but stay for the live Cuban jazz band that will take the stage on Friday and Saturday nights.
Opening Hours: Daily, 5 to 11 pm
Address: 41, 3 Sukhumvit Rd, Khlong Toei Nuea, Watthana, Bangkok 10110, Thailand

3. Honest Mistake
Upon entry, this bar might feel like an honest mistake — level one is a dimly lit pawnshop and level two is a 3D model of a scrappy neighbourhood. At this point in time you might be wondering if you’re in the right place and may feel the urge to turn back, but don’t! Hike just one story higher and you’ll enter the main bar. Influenced by the world of the 1930s triads, Honest Mistake Bar is a speakeasy designed to mirror a house of vices (gambling, drugs and illegal goods, you name it) serving up unique Chinese herbs based cocktails.
Opening Hours: Daily, 7 pm to 12 am
Address: 488 Phahonyothin Rd, Samsen Nai, Phaya Thai, Bangkok 10400, Thailand

4. J.Boroski Bangkok

When this place first came out, no one really had a clue where it was — except mixologist extraordinaire Joseph Boroski himself. Keen enthusiasts had to message him on Facebook in exchange for a map. Needless to say, all too soon, the spot got really popular and the bar’s cover was blown. However, we still recommend checking J.Broroski out for sublime cocktails made with rare and curated ingredients. The drinks here might cost you a pretty penny but everything from the ambience to the service makes it all worth your while.
Opening Hours: 6.30 pm to 12 am
Address: 16, 125/13 Thong Lo Rd, Khwaeng Khlong Tan Nuea, Khet Watthana, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10110, Thailand

5. Rabbit Hole

It might be three storeys high, but this bar is still surprisingly difficult to locate. However, people seemed to love it and Rabbit Hole was awarded a spot on Asia’s Best 50 Bars. If you’re curious about innovative potions concocted from quality produce, this bar should be on the top of your list. Choose between a heavy spirit base to lighter refreshments, either way you’re in for a trip and a night to remember.
Opening Hours: Daily, 6 to 11 pm
Address: 125 Thong Lo Rd, klongtonnuea, Watthana, Bangkok 10110, Thailand

6. Secret Chamber

Located on the second floor of Covent Garden Market French restaurant is this British attic-styled bar that specialised in single-malt whiskeys. Fans of cigars will be thrilled to learn that there are two private rooms for customers to puff in, as well as an assorted of imported Cuban cigars for purchase.
Pro-tip: Come on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, if you wish to listen to a live band rocking out to some good ol’ 90s tunes.
Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday, 12 pm to 12 am. Closed on Sundays
Address: อาคาร Too Fast To Sleep, Thanon Surawong, Si Phraya, Bang Rak, Bangkok 10500, Thailand

7. The Key Room No.72

We recommend donning your Sunday’s best when heading over to this elusive vintage bar in Josh Hotel. Upon arrival, head over to the front desk to ask for a key card in order to gain access. The cocktails are tailormade to paint the whimsical tale of the owner’s travels around the world — and we say, proceed with caution because they are potent.

8. The Locker Room

Located in a two-floor shophouse, all that’s between you and an award-winning selection of cocktails is a wall of gym lockers that you’ll have to peek through to find an opening to the bar. Snag a seat at the counter to get front-row action of the bartenders’ prowess when concocting each of their innovative cocktails. We love this spot for its unpretentious menus, nett-prices, and knowledgeable servers.
Opening Hours: Daily, 5 to 11 pm

9. VELA-Rooftop Sanam Pao

Okay, this one’s not quite hidden. It is, however, hidden from many tourists. A favourite amongst locals, VELA is a laid-back industrial-styled bar serving up modern Thai cuisine and a selection of cocktails to pair each dish with. There’s also live music here — so we recommend reserving a spot in advance because it can get quite packed! Oh, and fun fact, Chef Bus was top four on Top Chef Thailand so you know you’re in good hands.
Opening Hours: Daily, 5 to 11 pm
Address: 1029, 12 Phahonyothin Rd, Samsen Nai, Phaya Thai, Bangkok 10400, Thailand
