Ya Wang is Johor Bahru’s (JB) most popular herbal roasted duck eatery and it’s no wonder they’re also consultants to Singapore’s Dian Xiao Er restaurants!
Serving as the consultant to Singapore’s Dian Xiao Er restaurants for over 20 years, Restoran Ya Wang has established itself as one of the most popular herbal roasted duck eateries in the region. When Singaporeans go on a JB weekend trip, many wouldn’t miss Restoran Ya Wang for lunch, especially when it’s just barely a 15-minute walk from the checkpoint.
Just how great is the herbal roasted duck? Here’s a full food review of Restoran Ya Wang:
Ambience in Restoran Ya Wang
Located on 28 Jalan Segget near the popular cafe area of Jalan Dhoby, Restoran Ya Wang is hard to miss with its dated but striking yellow signboard. The fully air-conditioned restaurant seems to have stood still in time since the 1990s, with tile walls and old school decor.
Restoran Ya Wang Menu
Apart from its popular roasted duck, char siu, and roasted pork, Restoran Ya Wang also offers a variety of dishes you would find at a zi char place. Omelettes, stir-fried vegetables, beancurd, they’ve got it covered. Click on the menu images to enlarge.

Restoran Ya Wang Food Review
Among Restoran Ya Wang’s duck dishes, the Roasted Duck with Angelica Herb (RM 33 / SGD $11) is the best-seller. Drenched in sweet Angelica herb (also known as dang gui), the duck meat is soft, tender, and juicy. The duck skin is also thin and smoky without much fats underneath it. A perfect blend of sweet and savoury in every bite!
Roasted Duck with Angelica Herb: 5/5
As we didn’t have a big group to conquer the 1kg Char Siu portion, we got the minimum order of Char Siu (RM 15 / SGD $5) instead. Perhaps the roasted duck was too good, because we were slightly underwhelmed by the Char Siu. Even though it wasn’t dry, the meat was a little too lean and tough, which we thought it was a chore to keep chewing. The sweet honey flavour was absent too.
Char Siu: 3/5
We also got another minimum order of Roasted Pork (RM 15 / SGD $5). Because it wasn’t drenched in sauce, the Roasted Pork’s crispy skin was sinfully crunchy and the roasted flavour was aromatic in each bite.
Roasted Pork: 4/5
To complement the roast meat, we also ordered some savoury soya sauce Noodles (RM 1.50 / SGD $0.50). It’s hard to go wrong with these traditional springy noodles, especially in an established eatery like Restoran Ya Wang. We even forgot to eat the roast meat for a while!
Noodles: 5/5
When eating out, we would always order an extra omelette to share. We got the Shrimps Omelette (RM 16 / SGD $5.30) and was slightly disappointed with the dry pieces of shrimp. The omelette was also a bit too salty for us, and overall it was rather thin. The wok hei was pretty strong, and if you’re a fan of zi char omelettes, you might like this one.
Egg Omelette with Shrimp: 2/5
The perfect condiment for roast meat – chilli sauce. Restoran Ya Wang’s chilli sauce had a jelly-like consistency, and gradually numbed our tongues as we continued to taste. Though it wasn’t as fragrant as we wanted it to be, it had a tinge of sour, tangy flavour which was quite refreshing.
Chilli sauce: 4/5
Will we return to Restoran Ya Wang?
Yes. Restoran Ya Wang’s longstanding history is a testament to its food, especially the Roasted Duck with Angelica Herb! Over the decades, countless Singaporean families have crossed the causeway just to have a taste of the delicious roasted duck, and you shouldn’t miss it too.
