Clash Royale by Supercell is a multiplayer online game where players are tasked to build armies before battling it out against other (real) players in segments of up to five minutes. During these combats, you’ll fight using what you have in your armoury (i.e.cash stash) to ultimately destroy your opponents and rise up the ranks.

1. What is Clash Royale, and How Do You Play It?

In case you’re new to Clash Royale, here’s a quick breakdown. You’re here to take down your opponent’s tower/towers within the three minute regulation time. To do so, you’ll have to use any combination of eight cards — there’s a total of 103 cards that consist of troops and spells, each with their very own unique set of abilities. With each win, you’ll receive trophies that will push you higher up the ranks.

2. Basics of Clash Royale

A. Cards

Now, on to the nitty-gritties. Each card, and player, starts from level 1 — out of a maximum level of 13. This means that maxing out all 103 cards is both time-consuming and a little unnecessary, especially since there are different categories of cards. The categories are: ‘common’, ‘rare’, ‘epic’ and ‘legendary’, the last two being the more special and powerful ones that are pretty difficult to attain from the Chests. This brings us to the next important segment. 

B. Chests

Chests are free, and are given out whenever a player wins a match — be it ‘1-v-1’ or ‘2-v-2’. Each chest contains gold and cards that could help increase card levels. That said, this way of levelling up is usually much slower than using any of the magic items and gems in-game. 

There are special chests available that contain more gold, and said gems — but only if you’re lucky — plus, more cards of the rarer category. However, the occurrence of attaining one of these chests is as common as spotting a full moon. To make things a little trickier, there are only four chest slots available and each chest has a counter that tells you how long you’ve to wait till you can open one. The minimum ‘opening time’ is at least 3 hours! 

C. Magic Items

Recently introduced by Supercell, magic items have been added to the world of Clash Royale to help players increase their card levels quicker. Here are a few of the more sought-after ones:

D. Trading Tokens

This allows players within the same clan to trade cards, depending on what they have on hand (i.e. common, rare, epic, or legendary cards). Here’s an example of an epic token in use:

E. Star Points

Mainly used for flexing, players use this type of currency to personalise each character before they appear at a match. Cards that Players give star points to will have gold trims around them and have to be maxed out in the level.

3. Gems: Clash Royale’s Premium Currency 

As mentioned, gems can be obtained from chests but in small numbers (around two). But what are gems for? 

Well, gems allow players special access to Classic (costs 10 gems) and Grand (costs 100 gems) challenges — game modes whereby players can not just attain gold and cards with every win, but also when they bow out of a challenge after three losses. Unfortunately, the rewards of a Classic challenge aren’t as substantial as the ones in Grand challenges. And the level of competition in each Grand Challenge is high. 

However, gems also allow free-to-play (F2P) players to re-enter Special challenges throughout each season — and these challenges offer much more attractive rewards than Classic challenges. The downside for F2P players is that harvesting gems take a really long time and can be quite off-putting. 

4. How To Get Clash Royale Gems

A. Head to the In-game Shop

Players can use cash or in-game currency (gold or gems) to make purchases at the in-game shop. Here’s the landing page where you can find the shop right at the bottom left corner.

B. Find The Gems in The Store
