1. Rickshaw Noodles

When we think of fast food, the typical Mcdonald’s burgers or KFC fried chicken instantly spring to mind. But in Hong Kong, what’s considered fast food may be a little surprising. Introducing Rickshaw Noodles — a hot favourite in Hong Kong since the 1960s that are typically found on every street corner and sold from wooden carts back in the good ol’ days.
Now commonly found in modern shops, this bowl of goodness consists of instant noodles mixed together with a variety of ingredients such as hogskin, fishballs, sirloin, and carrots. It’s then served with steaming hot soup and topped with sauces to create the perfect affordable comfort meal.

2. Roast Goose

A traditional Cantonese staple, the Roast Goose is arguably the most popular dish in Hong Kong that’s worth travelling miles for. Think light crispy skin with rich tender meat that oozes juices and melts in your mouth. The succulent meat is then paired with a sweet yet sour plum sauce for a little acidity to balance out the flavours. Deeeelicious.

7. Snake Soup

Here’s a little something to test your limits — Snake Soup! Now, we know this sounds pretty daunting. But Snake Soup is surprisingly popular in Hong Kong due to its medicinal value and high nutritional benefits. It’s typically made of at least two types of snakes and boiled with chicken, pork bone, lean meat, fish maw, mushrooms, and fungus. As well as flavoured with ginger, lemon leaves, and other spices for that fragrant blend of sweet and spicy. Thick and aromatic, this slithery broth tastes just like chicken.

8. Pig’s Blood Curd

Known as ‘Blood Tofu’ or ‘Blood Pudding’, this soft and chewy jello-looking dish surprisingly doesn’t have much taste to it. Instead, it absorbs the flavour of the sauce it’s cooked with and is even eaten with salt and sugar for that extra seasoning.
A popular Cantonese delicacy, it’s often paired with Congee and Rickshaw Noodles. It can also be found in night markets as a prevalent street snack called Pig’s Blood Cake — a mixture of pig’s blood, fried/steamed sticky rice, and peanut flour that’s served on a stick. Don’t knock it till you try it!

10. Pineapple Bun

Saving the best for last, we have the legendary pastry — the Pineapple Bun (a.k.a Bor Lor Bao). A bun that’s crusty and crumbly on the outside yet retains its fluffy texture on the inside with a slice of butter right smack in the middle. It’s also been said to give off a slightly sweet taste that resembles butter cookies! Yum.
You may ask, but where in the world is the pineapple? Well… truth be told, there’s actually no pineapple in the recipe. Instead, the bun got its name by looking like a pineapple. Especially from the top with its criss-cross pattern across its golden crust.
