If you’re planning a trip to the UK in 2026, there’s one new requirement you’ll want to get sorted early: Australians will now need to apply for a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling.
It’s a small extra step — but miss it, and you may be stopped before your journey even begins.
Here’s what the new entry rule entails, who needs to take note of it, and how to make sure it doesn’t disrupt your travel plans.
When does the UK ETA become mandatory?

While the UK’s ETA was introduced in 2025 – it will be shifting from a largely optional rollout to full enforcement from 25 February 2026 onwards. Once that happens, it becomes a mandatory requirement for travellers from 85 visa-free countries, including Australia.
In practical terms, this means:
- You must have an approved ETA before boarding your flight
- Airlines will check your ETA at check-in
- No ETA = you may be denied boarding
What exactly is a UK ETA?
An Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital permission that allows you to travel to the UK for short stays. It’s technically not a visa, and thankfully you won’t need to visit an embassy or consulate to apply for one.
Your ETA can be applied easily online and will be linked electronically to your passport, so there’s nothing to print or carry.
With an ETA, Australians can visit the UK for up to six months at a time for:
- holidays and sightseeing
- visiting friends or family
- short business trips
- other permitted short-term activities
Who needs to apply?
You’ll need to apply for an ETA if you:
- hold an Australian passport
- don’t already have a UK visa or residency status
- are travelling to the UK for a short stay
Each travelling person needs their own ETA, and this includes children and babies.
Who doesn’t need one?
You don’t need an ETA if you:
- hold a British or Irish passport (this includes dual citizens)
- have a valid UK visa or permission to live, work, or study in the UK
- are transiting airside and not passing UK border control
🚨 Important note: If you’re a dual citizen with Australian and British or Irish citizenship, you do not need an ETA. However, you will need to prove your citizenship using:
- A valid British or Irish passport (make sure it hasn’t expired)
- Another valid passport containing a certificate of entitlement
How much does a UK ETA cost and how long is it valid for?
- Cost: ÂŁ16 (~A$32) per application (paid online)
- Validity: Up to 2 years, or until your passport expires
- Entries: Multiple trips allowed during the validity period
- Length of stay: Up to 6 months per visit
If you renew your passport, you’ll need to apply for a new one.
How do Australians apply for an ETA?
There are only two official ways to apply for a UK ETA:
- Online via GOV.UK
- Via the official UK ETA mobile app
According to the UK Government’s official guide, most ETA applications are processed quickly (usually within a day), but you’re recommended to apply at least a few days before travel in case additional checks are required. You will receive a 16 digit ETA reference number once your ETA has been approved.
