Norges Bank, the country’s central bank, found in its latest survey that 3% of people paid with cash for their most recent purchase at a physical shop. Norwegians made an average of 595 card transactions each in 2025.

The same report shows cash machines shrinking. Norway had 1,028 ATMs at the end of 2025, down from 1,129 a year earlier. Shops also made more cash withdrawals than ATMs did for the first time, 11.2 million against 10.3 million, although ATMs still paid out more by value. You can still use cash in Norway, but few shops rely on it.

Where cash still helps:

Rural honesty boxes and farm stands. Parking, firewood and farm produce are sometimes sold on trust, and some show only a Vipps number (Norway’s mobile payment app, which normally needs a Norwegian ID number, bank account and BankID)

Remote public toilets and small kiosks. A card terminal that’s offline in the mountains leaves cash as the only option

Local markets and one-off events. Small stalls without a working card reader still turn up outside the cities

For a week in Norway, a few hundred kroner is plenty. Our suggestion is 500 to 1,000 NOK (~S$69 to S$138) in small notes if you’re staying in cities. If you’re driving through the countryside, take up to 2,000 NOK (~S$276).

Draw it in a regional hub before heading into fjord or mountain country, because machines can be limited or nonexistent in very small towns and national park areas. Take out less than you think you’ll need, since leftover kroner can be awkward to use up once you’re home.

Cards cover everything else: groceries, restaurants, trains, taxis and attractions. A YouTrip card charges no foreign transaction fee on any of it.

What Currency Does Norway Use, and Are Euros Accepted?

Norway uses the Norwegian krone (NOK), and euros are rarely accepted. The country is in Europe but outside the eurozone, so shops, restaurants and transport price and charge in kroner. VisitNorway says foreign currency is rarely accepted, so you need kroner to get by. A few tourist-area shops may take euros or US dollars, but at a poor rate.

Common amounts come to roughly this:

NOK

Approx. Money changers build a markup of a few percent into the rate they quote, and an ATM withdrawal on a card with no FX fee avoids that. Norges Bank counts 714 cash-dispensing ATMs and 314 recycling machines, which both take deposits and pay out cash. Banks own about a third of them. Nokas, Loomis and other companies own the rest, and Nokas and Loomis operate most machines, including most of the bank-owned ones.

Cost comes from two places:

The Norwegian machine’s own fee: set by whoever owns the machine, and shown on screen before you confirm

Your own card’s charges: a foreign transaction fee on most Singapore bank cards, plus an overseas ATM fee

You can’t change the first one. Norway’s banks and operators don’t publish a tourist fee list. One consumer guide reports 10 to 60 NOK (~S$1 to S$8) per transaction at bank ATMs that do charge, so treat that as a rough guide. What you’ll actually pay is the fee shown on the screen.

2. YouTrip charges no FX fee and gives you your first S$400 of overseas ATM withdrawals each calendar month free, then 2% after that.

Use a debit or travel card for this rather than a credit card. Most credit cards treat an ATM withdrawal as a cash advance, which costs more than a normal purchase. DBS, for example, charges 8% of the amount, with a minimum of S$15.

3. It says the conversion normally carries a markup of six to seven percent. Norwegians can withdraw cash at the checkout in shops linked to NorgesGruppen and some Bunnpris stores. Norges Bank says this “in-store cash services” scheme requires a BankAxept card and PIN.
