For the unacquainted, a \u2018powerful passport\u2019 basically means one that can get you pretty much anywhere you want to go, mostly without the need for a visa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How it works is that every so often, the Henley Passport Index<\/a> taps into data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to rank all the passports on the list by checking them against all the possible travel destinations in the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If no visa is required for passport holders from a particular country or territory to enter a destination, then that passport scores a point. It also scores a point if a visa-on-arrival or an electronic travel authority (ETA) can be obtained \u2014 as these don\u2019t require crazy paperwork thanks to visa-waiver programs put in place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, Singapore managed to outrank Japan, after the incumbent held the top spot for five consecutive years! Our little book of stamps allows us to visit a whopping 192 travel destinations out of 227 around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In second place, there is a three-way tie between Germany, Italy, and Spain, where passport holders of these countries get to enjoy access to 190 destinations. And in third place, Japan, along with Austria, Finland, France, Luxembourg, South Korea, and Sweden have access to 189 travel destinations. As you can tell, the competition is really<\/em> tight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
