As part of Singapore\u2019s reopening efforts, since 8 September, fully vaccinated travellers have been allowed to enter and exit Singapore via the Vaccinated Travel Lane for all types of travel \u2014 leisure included. For us, that simply means being able to travel to Germany without the sinking feeling of having to serve quarantine upon our return.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But where should we go? The main cities would be fine \u2014 but after being cramped up in our lovely island home for about two years, we figured it might be time to step out into the wild. Enter: Sara, a dear friend I made back in university, who happens to be an avid hiker, a bona fide nature lover, and also a proud resident of Germany. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Pf\u00e4lzer Wald (Palatinate forest)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Why it\u2019s Great:<\/strong> With more than 20 hiking trails in this cross-border UNESCO biosphere reserve, Pf\u00e4lzerwald (also known as Palatinate Forest) represents one of the largest forest areas in Western Europe. But luscious trees, dipping valleys, and picturesque brooks are just the beginning. Here, you\u2019ll also find the majestic sandstone cliffs of \u201cDahner Felsenland\u201d, medieval castle ruins, as well as a thriving wildlife scene. In addition to all that, visitors can also enjoy the fruits of this international partnership, and support it, by participating in the regular Franco-German farmers\u2019 markets that take place regularly in multiple places around the area. The best part? Entry is always free!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why it\u2019s Great:<\/strong> Darker, and kind of spooky, the Black Forest is famed for its thick canopy of evergreens that layer over hills and valleys alike. At times when you do actually come across a clearing on one of your treks through the woodlands, you\u2019re likely to find a quaint meadow, an ethereal waterfall, or a lake there \u2014 iconic bits of nature that would fit in well in any one of Enid Blyton\u2019s stories. Pro-tip: Make sure you go early in the morning or around sunset to see it in all its glory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why it\u2019s Great: <\/strong>Save this sleepy seaside town for days when you just wanna do a little R&R. Lying on the northern coast of Germany, B\u00fcsum (once known as Biusne) is a proud survivor of not one but three centuries worth of tidal waves before flood barriers were finally built-in in the sixteenth century. From a principal fishing harbour, the town has now transformed itself into a seaside resort and spa. Have a stroll by the promenade before dodging into any one of their cute bistros for a seafood treat. Fun fact: B\u00fcsum borders the Schleswig-Holstein Coastal Wadden Sea National Park. Why it\u2019s Great:<\/strong> With chalky green-haired cliffs perched above white sand beaches that fade quietly into turquoise waters, R\u00fcgen Island is the ideal retreat for anyone looking to clear their mind away from the hustle and bustle of the city.  There\u2019s 574km of coastline here, so you\u2019re definitely promised a spot away from the crowd \u2014 should there be one. Choose to stay in one of their luxurious resorts, or simply enjoy it all on a day trip from Stralsund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why it\u2019s Great:<\/strong> A quick google and you\u2019ll discover that Saxon Switzerland is one of the most popular destinations in Germany for rock climbing and cycling \u2014 and with over 15,000 routes, it\u2019s no wonder! Also known as Elbsandsteingebirge (Elbe Sandstone Mountains), expect nothing but breathtaking and exotic elevated plateaus spotted with villages and castles alike. If you\u2019re in a rush, there\u2019s the option to do it all within a day if you\u2019re at Dresden. Otherwise, stay a night or two to truly take it all in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The adventurous come here to canoe, kayak, or fish \u2014 with a good handful opting for the popular Kahn rides that take visitors through the channels on a shallow punt boat. For those who rather see the sights on foot, lace up those boots and follow the walking trails that trace through the magical forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
