As such, we thought it might be fitting to do a run-through of the various countries and study their strategies against the virus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"#masks\">Face Masks That Can Detect COVID-19<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"#lockdown\">Lockdowns, Contact Tracing Apps and Their Difficulties<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"#herd\">Vaccinations: Is Herd Immunity a Thing?<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Percentage Of The World\u2019s Population Is Vaccinated?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/PQ51wssAtRO6YlM6ZYZmNlDYBOjQFLZ-hyE_rBeIT6mNaYVgpdzaYKkn3iNdWdBq99BuUQ8vqjd1FfNH9vmlkJxqtywH9xn4FMHVUlvvTQ44GLBnJsUClfrjGkwPIs-NAWICpNEa\" alt=\"3 Global COVID-19 Strategies: The Fight Against Pandemic\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/covid-vaccinations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Our World in Data<\/a>, a project by the University of Oxford, records that 23.2% of the world population has had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, with about three billion doses administered worldwide.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/europe\/world-passes-three-billion-covid-19-vaccine-mark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Straits Times<\/a> reports more positive numbers for China, India, the United States, and the Middle East. In fact, for every 100 people, the United Arab Emirates has given out 153 doses and Israel has doled out 124.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/world\/covid-vaccinations-tracker.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New York Times<\/a> cites concern for the widening gap between vaccination programs in different countries, with only 0.9% of the population of low-income countries receiving at least one dose \u2014 even with the Covax sharing scheme run by the World Health Organisation, the Gavi alliance and the Cepi coalition. As of today, five countries have yet to start their vaccination campaigns according to The Straits Times. They are Tanzania, Burundi, Eritrea, Haiti and North Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"masks\"><strong>1. Face Masks That Can Detect COVID-19<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/duiJHDk7_uV_T_SJGn7VKddcmqfGV0BmR-yil1kCxcQv_kakE6fqdi5do1M98v16yqngKxSikMkAzXAdo8WHypyEkSJfbrgvMxXBLs5-nh76XD08jPU8ucOJNB6d8t6Wg_BlalAv\" alt=\"3 Global COVID-19 Strategies: The Fight Against Pandemic\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of May, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.you.co\/sg\/blog\/singapore-covid-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\">Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong addressed the nation<\/a> regarding the need for more extensive tests, vaccinations and faster contact tracing to keep the virus under control. The government is certain that the new normal includes being able to carry on with our lives amid the pandemic. Just as we do with the common flu.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, Scientists have taken it one step further to making this new normal a reality. This includes working to incorporate sensors into our daily wear. If all goes according to plan, fabrics like masks and jackets would be able to inform its wearers instantly if they have been exposed to \u201cdisease-causing pathogens\u201d by lighting up. This sensor, created using the CRISPR gene-editing technology, is used in a similar way to how \u201cour skin works, where you automatically sense your environment with exquisite sensitivity without needing to actively participate in the details of the process itself&#8221;, as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/europe\/scientists-study-making-face-masks-that-can-detect-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Straits Times<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"lockdown\"><strong>2. Lockdowns, Contact Tracing Apps &amp; Their Difficulties<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/ED_xW3zPs-bAQ5D4DAx6aUY4rQ3mMi-0Dq6Q8xiYwiEF4vcoNTcZl3QFxEhtZTxistVyLl5Mbq7_fi8hpfVY3yFE5PXBpC422BF9XYrcYid_ip92D7S3RSy4wb2Kj60ulPa0tPH7\" alt=\"3 Global COVID-19 Strategies: The Fight Against Pandemic\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thailand:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a bid to combat new waves of infections, the Thai government has been promoting Mor Chana. The app works by recording where each individual is and at what time. When they come into contact with COVID-19 patients, health officials will alert the at-risk individuals via the app. While the app relies heavily on the number of active users, the number of downloads is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/news\/asia\/transparency-thailand-covid19-contact-tracing-app-mor-chana-14096014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">less than 20% of Thailand\u2019s Internet users<\/a> because many fear losing their privacy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Malaysia:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As COVID-19 numbers in Malaysia continue to soar with the country still in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/no-choice-but-to-extend-lockdown-but-malaysia-health-experts-call-for-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an extended lockdown<\/a> that won\u2019t be lifted till daily new cases dip below 4000, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/week-asia\/health-environment\/article\/3119162\/year-after-its-first-coronavirus-case-malaysias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SCMP reports<\/a> the concerns that public health experts are having about the nation\u2019s contact-tracing efforts via MySerahtera and SELangkah. Amongst them are worried that health officials have no idea what to do with the data \u2014 amidst complaints of patients testing positive with no follow-up, as well as thousands of close contacts being missed daily. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/malaysia-announces-additional-rm150-billion-aid-package-for-extended-covid-19-lockdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to help their citizens<\/a> tide through this, about S$48.6 billion have been set aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/6YWLxhYqYWp4Xz4oEoY2q6uWYr2jvVtXxoowWEjASnExKnizYQ5Tk2Cd3gUG_jNH-sk-CeRtRns0FkSg17i4MfOQPxiEciMBn40N_xqm6ZnWk5Biirp9aejYV7CI3Uur1069C8kW\" alt=\"3 Global COVID-19 Strategies: The Fight Against Pandemic\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Australia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Various parts of Australia have been subject to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/australianz\/australias-tardy-covid-19-vaccine-roll-out-criticised-amid-new-lockdowns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201c72-hour snap lockdown\u201d<\/a>, with Canberra being the latest to join Sydney, Perth and Darwin \u2014 all to contain the spread of the Delta variant. Meanwhile, the government is trying hard to encourage vaccinations amidst \u201csupply-chain holdups from contracted drugmakers\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Indonesia:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indonesia battles the \u2018more transmissible\u2019 Delta variant. Thus, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/indonesia-to-impose-hard-covid-19-lockdown-from-june-30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced by their government<\/a>, stricter precautions \u2018Pemberlakuan Pembatasan Kegiatan Masyarakat Darurat\u2019 are expected to be imposed at the start of July to restrict public activity. This may include work-from-home and no-dining-in policies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"herd\"><strong>3. Vaccinations: Is Herd Immunity a Thing?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/4fllEHJXHfauN7hHVkDmYHktU3usTVuzZBdF7-6MohfEZTptMbE1BsaQUJpv5xKDRnVOIi7phNvfhedWZEEYzCR9s5sX9Lby8L-IvpUw7w-5vjfLkPLGuz0C_70RcXPa04F18XTR\" alt=\"3 Global COVID-19 Strategies: The Fight Against Pandemic\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jhsph.edu\/covid-19\/articles\/achieving-herd-immunity-with-covid19.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Johns Hopkins<\/a> classifies herd immunity to have successfully happened when most of a population \u201cis immune to an infectious disease\u201d, which provides \u201cindirect protection to those who are not immune to the disease\u201d. For this to happen, \u201cit is important to get as many people as possible vaccinated\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A local example would be the Singapore Armed Forces, who would have \u201cmore than 90% fully vaccinated by mid-July\u201d. As a result, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/saf-has-achieved-covid-19-herd-immunity-more-than-90-fully-vaccinated-by-mid-july-ng-eng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Straits Times<\/a>, the SAF would be able to&nbsp; minimise disruptions and \u201cease restrictions to allow units to operate at maximum effectiveness\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Malaysia:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regionally, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/se-asia\/coronavirus-herd-immunity-in-sight-for-kuala-lumpur-putrajaya-labuan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">predicted to be<\/a> the first areas in Malaysia to hit herd immunity following reports that vaccine registrations have at least hit 80 per cent&nbsp; 100 per cent among their target population aged 18 and above. In addition, the number of vaccinations has \u201cincreased from 7,000 to 35,789 per day\u201d \u2014&nbsp;\u201din Putrajaya alone, the numbers have increased from 1,000 to 1,800 per day, while in Labuan, it has more than quadrupled, from 700 to 3,000 a day\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/j3-TclzW1ne54mJoMlEZNwkEFTzT3wMktgKry91_EADPiifnK9aDrHCccK4yvCEYHddrjvJ9yGG2z_zG7QWWIg4E2TyyNUXk8NEOJPB10ufrlR28XBOcTsL75-nXCSHPALzbFMDu\" alt=\"3 Global COVID-19 Strategies: The Fight Against Pandemic\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Israel:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israel has seen much success in their COVID-19 efforts that employed an \u201caggressive vaccine purchase strategy\u201d. In fact, at one point, Israel&#8217;s Ministry of Health had removed all COVID-19 restrictions including the need for face masks indoors. They also started the &#8220;Green Pass&#8221; system that \u201callows greater freedoms for vaccinated people\u201d. However, they have since reintroduced compulsory mask-wearing indoors just 10 days after the amendment because of a surge in Delta variant related infections \u2014 as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/israel-a-world-leader-in-fighting-the-virus-grapples-with-a-new-outbreak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Straits Times<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Russia:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With regards to vaccines, Russia&#8217;s Sputnik V vaccine has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/europe\/russias-sputnik-v-covid-19-shot-around-90-effective-against-delta-variant-developers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said to be<\/a> \u201caround 90 per cent effective against the highly contagious Delta variant. Meanwhile, Moderna&#8217;s COVID-19 vaccine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/modernas-covid-19-vaccine-shows-promise-against-delta-variant-in-lab-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has been reported<\/a> to produce neutralising antibodies against all variants, \u201cincluding additional versions of the Beta variant\u201d as well as all three lineage variants including the Kappa and the Delta variants!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Just Hold On &#8211; The Global Fight Against COVID-19 Is Underway<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/Wg_7tBQvo10h4-54QnXRHb3B03pL11sBoxsnN9k4jfWNOSAU2EhbjDDs8-0rhG-nh7x9-OHQnl7de1pQdss4hIRp-JXnTUUzOsBbGtbB_erq7nLIBp1mQQqKOnULW30NIxQAjlfU\" alt=\"3 Global COVID-19 Strategies: The Fight Against Pandemic\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If anything, we hope that this article has been a good reminder that you aren\u2019t alone and we are all in this together.
