Expedia is one of those companies belonging to the latter, as they uncover insightful data about how things are changing for travellers and habits that come out of it, in their 2021 Travel Trends Report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCovid-19 has influenced the travel mindset of Singaporeans. Not only are they looking to travel to destinations that are closer to home, our data also indicates a bigger emphasis on keeping flexibility, health, and hygiene as top priorities when planning and booking travel,&#8221; says Lavinia Rajaram, APAC Head of Communications at Expedia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As companies, including Expedia, work towards the resumption of international travel in 2021, Lavinia explains that there&#8217;s a need to pay closer attention to traveller behaviour, which will be pivotal in rebuilding confidence and trust in travel for Singaporeans to explore the world again in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Weekdays Are For Greater Savings \ud83d\udcb0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/1wnG7MthFsP598dU7X\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expedia has partnered with Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) to uncover data on the average airline ticket prices based on the day of the week, as well as tapping into its own database to give us average accommodation prices based on the day of the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the above mentioned data:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>15% cheaper:<\/strong> Book airline tickets on Sunday; Fridays are the most expensive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>10% cheaper:<\/strong> Depart on a Tuesday or Thursday<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lower prices:<\/strong> Book accommodation to stay on a Monday<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Free Cancellation or Rebooking is Essential \u260e\ufe0f<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/em4Ue35YUZ2DOVSagj\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of COVID-19\u2019s effects on travel have to do with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.you.co\/sg\/blog\/airlines-flight-refund-cancellations-coronavirus-covid19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flight<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.you.co\/sg\/blog\/covid19-hotel-booking-refunds-cancellations-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hotel<\/a> cancellations and refunds. In fact, many who have booked flights or accommodation prior to lockdown are still in the process of getting their refunds, or have changed that arrangement to rebooking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moving forward, these travellers\u2019 demands for booking flexibility have been well noted by the travel industry. As such, data from Expedia reflects that the average daily rates for refundable accommodation bookings were 31 percent lower in 2020 as compared to 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Not-So-Advanced Booking Habits \ud83d\udcc5<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/3o7TKOuYcKMnqqatjy\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the volatility and uncertainty in these times, Singaporeans are holding their horses as to how early to book for their flights. What used to be a two or three month buffer time before the flight itself has been shortened to one month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>2019:<\/strong> Travellers were booking ~46 days before their flight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2020:<\/strong> Travellers are now booking ~33 days before their flight<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is of course, aided by the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.you.co\/sg\/blog\/flying-post-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rebooking fees are much lower<\/a>, or even free, than it used to be in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Singaporeans Travel Bug Not Going Away \u2708\ufe0f<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/qFi3fACSMnP4Q\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, Expedia conducted a survey with 1,000 adults aged between 18 and 45 in Singapore. The results of that survey revealed that within <strong>23 days<\/strong> of the Circuit Breaker, Singaporeans reached their \u2018tripping point\u2019 or rather, the point at which the travel bug hits you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>42%<\/strong> &#8211; Need to get out of the house for a change in scenery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>28%<\/strong> &#8211; Need to be alone and free to do whatever they wanted<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>26%<\/strong> &#8211; Want to indulge in activities that they usually wouldn&#8217;t at home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>25%<\/strong> &#8211; Need to see family or friends in other destinations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Half of the respondents also revealed that they felt bored, upset, or stressed because they couldn&#8217;t look forward to their next holiday. To manage these emotions, they chose to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>43%<\/strong> &#8211; Take personal time to look after themselves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>37% <\/strong>&#8211; Get into a new hobby<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>37%<\/strong> &#8211; Spend more quality time with family<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>36%<\/strong> &#8211; Get into exercise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It didn&#8217;t take long for cabin fever to kick in too \u2013 just <strong>36 days<\/strong> into Circuit Breaker in July and Singaporeans started searching for hotels in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, London, New York, Sydney, Bangkok, and Shanghai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when Circuit Breaker ended, it took Singaporeans <strong>17 days<\/strong> to book a trip away from home: 52% booked a staycation, 31% booked an overseas trip, and 17% booked both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:23px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Ranking<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>2020 Most Searched Destination<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>2020 Most Booked Destination<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>1<\/td><td>Singapore<\/td><td>Singapore<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>2<\/td><td>Tokyo<\/td><td>Bangkok<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>3<\/td><td>Bangkok<\/td><td>Johor<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>4<\/td><td>Maldives<\/td><td>Kuala Lumpur<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>5<\/td><td>Bali<\/td><td>Bali<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>6<\/td><td>Seoul<\/td><td>Jakarta<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>7<\/td><td>Taipei<\/td><td>Ho Chi Minh City<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>8<\/td><td>Osaka<\/td><td>Manila<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>9<\/td><td>Johor<\/td><td>Selangor<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>10<\/td><td>Phuket<\/td><td>Batam<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With Singapore at the top of the list of both most searched and booked destinations, it&#8217;s clear that Singaporeans are turning to hotel staycations to fulfil their holiday vibes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.you.co\/sg\/blog\/singapore-staycation-deals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Staycation deals, anyone<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Travel Bubbles and Reciprocal Green Lanes Inspire Travel \u2705<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/1k2UkosDXj5qsjoDiv\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Singapore-Hong Kong travel bubble, as well as the many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.you.co\/sg\/blog\/coronavirus-travel-update-singapore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reciprocal Green Lane agreements with other countries<\/a>, inspires a lot of confidence within travellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, The Straits Times reported that flights between Singapore and Hong Kong for dates between 22 November to 30 November 2020 were <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/transport\/spore-to-hong-kong-flights-from-nov-22-to-30-snapped-up-after-air-travel-bubble\" target=\"_blank\">sold out<\/a> following the news that the travel bubble has opened. That being said, travel bubbles aren&#8217;t bulletproof either. With Hong Kong entering its 4th wave of COVID-19 infections, the SG-HK travel bubble has been <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/news\/singapore\/covid-19-singapore-hong-kong-air-travel-bubble-launch-deferred-13609978\" target=\"_blank\">suspended for two weeks<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many Singaporeans are holding onto their seat belts and hoping this turbulence of unlinked COVID-19 cases would quell, so that they get to scratch their travel bug itch again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>My YouTrip Card is Loaded &amp; Ready to Go&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8230; as soon as this speed hump is over and done with.
