Let\u2019s find out!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s been a hot minute since the world went into lockdown, the burning question on everyone&#8217;s minds is: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.you.co\/sg\/blog\/when-can-we-travel-again\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#702d82\" class=\"color\">when can we travel?<\/span><\/a> According to projections by Brian Pearce, the Chief Economist at the International Air Transport Association (IATA), it seems to be in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, news came on the last weekend of 21 August 2020 that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/health\/singapore-to-allow-general-travel-to-brunei-new-zealand-travellers-to-take-heed-of\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color:#702d82\" class=\"color\">Singapore has given the green light to travel to Brunei Darussalam and New Zealand<\/span><\/a> starting 1 September 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good news for us? If you belong to one of those groups of people, you&#8217;ll have to be in compliance with prevailing border control measures, be it in Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, and New Zealand, or whatever country your institution is in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Does \u201cGeneral Travel\u201d Mean?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trawling through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.sg\/article\/check-on-travel-restrictions-before-you-fly-overseas-during-this-covid-19-period\"><span style=\"color:#702d82\" class=\"color\">Gov.sg<\/span><\/a> site for clarification on this ambiguous term does not reveal anything, but another quick check on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) website shows that you can\u2019t travel to Brunei Darussalam and New Zealand just yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Country<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Border Open To Singaporeans?<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pmo.gov.bn\/SiteCollectionDocuments\/covid19\/Entry-Travel-Pass-Application-Guidelines.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color:#702d82\" class=\"color\">Brunei Darussalam<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/td><td>Yes, but only for the following groups of people:<br>\u2022 Essential business travel (including official travel)<br>\u2022 Students<br>\u2022 Medical tourists seeking treatment in Brunei<br>\u2022 Compassionate circumstances, such as spouse or immediate family members of Brunei Citizens<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mfa.gov.sg\/countries-regions\/n\/new-zealand\/travel-page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color:#702d82\" class=\"color\">New Zealand<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/td><td>No<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It could be very possible that MFA\u2019s website has not been updated at the time of writing, so let\u2019s dig a little deeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Does Brunei Darussalam Have To Say About Singaporean Tourists Travelling There?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"449\" src=\"https:\/\/www.you.co\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/Opera-Snapshot_2020-08-24_164633_www.bruneitourism.com_.png\" alt=\"brunei tourism board border closed to singaporeans\" class=\"wp-image-20758\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.you.co\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/Opera-Snapshot_2020-08-24_164633_www.bruneitourism.com_.png 900w, https:\/\/www.you.co\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/Opera-Snapshot_2020-08-24_164633_www.bruneitourism.com_-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/www.you.co\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/Opera-Snapshot_2020-08-24_164633_www.bruneitourism.com_-768x383.png 768w, https:\/\/www.you.co\/sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/08\/Opera-Snapshot_2020-08-24_164633_www.bruneitourism.com_-600x299.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of 3 September 2020, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore have agreed to do a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pmo.gov.bn\/SiteCollectionDocuments\/covid19\/Entry-Travel-Pass-Application-Guidelines.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Reciprocal Green Lane <\/a>arrangement for the following group of people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Essential business travel (including official travel)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medical tourists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compassionate circumstances, such as spouse or immediate family members of Brunei Citizens<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re looking to travel there for a holiday, <em>sike<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bruneitourism.com\/covid19-travellers-advisory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">you&#8217;re still not allowed to travel to Brunei Darussalam<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the flipside, it <em>makes cents <\/em>why Singapore is relaxing its border restrictions with travellers from Brunei Darussalam. The country has had a record of <a href=\"https:\/\/borneobulletin.com.bn\/2020\/08\/brunei-records-one-new-covid-19-case-after-91-days-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color:#702d82\" class=\"color\">91 days of no new COVID-19 cases <\/span><\/a>up until 7 August 2020, when a 24-year-old man travelling home from Yemen contracted it. Where he contracted it from is unclear, and is besides the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To date, Brunei Darussalam has had only a total of 143 COVID-19 cases, according to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moh.gov.bn\/Shared%20Documents\/2019%20ncov\/press%20releases\/Press%20Release%20on%20the%20current%20situation%20of%20COVID-19%20in%20Brunei%20Darussalam%20(23.08.2020).pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#702d82\" class=\"color\">this report<\/span><\/a> by Brunei Darussalam\u2019s Ministry of Health. While MFA\u2019s website tells us to visit New Zealand\u2019s official government\u2019s website, we found that it only contains information pertaining to its nationals. We did another search on New Zealand\u2019s border status and found Immigration New Zealand, saying that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.immigration.govt.nz\/about-us\/covid-19\/border-closures-and-exceptions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color:#702d82\" class=\"color\"><strong>its borders are closed to almost all travellers, including Singaporeans<\/strong>.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is supported by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/news\/singapore\/new-zealand-travel-advisory-singapore-travel-advisory-13043882\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color:#702d82\" class=\"color\">statement from a spokesperson by Immigration New Zealand<\/span><\/a>, who said that they\u2019re aware of Singapore\u2019s intent to establish travel between the two countries, but the border restrictions will remain in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much like Brunei Darussalam, New Zealand has had a relatively low number of COVID-19 cases, with only 1,332 people in its 5 million population being infected by the virus.
