Once that happens, it becomes a mandatory requirement for travellers from 85 visa-free countries, including Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practical terms, this means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You must have an <strong>approved ETA before boarding your flight<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Airlines will check your ETA at check-in<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No ETA = you may be denied boarding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What exactly is a UK ETA?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/eta\">Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)<\/a><\/strong> is a digital permission that allows you to travel<em> <\/em>to the UK for short stays. It\u2019s technically <strong>not a visa<\/strong>, and thankfully you won&#8217;t need to visit an embassy or consulate to apply for one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your ETA can be applied easily online and will be linked electronically to your passport, so there\u2019s nothing to print or carry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With an ETA, Australians can visit the UK for up to <strong>six months at a time<\/strong> for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>holidays and sightseeing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>visiting friends or family<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>short business trips<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>other permitted short-term activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who needs to apply?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019ll need to apply for an ETA if you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>hold an <strong>Australian passport<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>don\u2019t already have a <strong>UK visa or residency status<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>are travelling to the UK for a short stay<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each travelling person needs their <strong>own ETA<\/strong>, and this includes children and babies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who doesn\u2019t need one?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don\u2019t need an ETA if you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>hold a <strong>British or Irish passport<\/strong> (this includes dual citizens)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have a valid UK visa or permission to live, work, or study in the UK<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>are <strong>transiting<\/strong> <strong>airside <\/strong>and not passing UK border control<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udea8 Important note: If you&#8217;re a <strong>dual citizen <\/strong>with Australian and British or Irish citizenship, you do not need an ETA. However, you will need to prove your citizenship using:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A valid British or Irish passport (make sure it hasn&#8217;t expired)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another valid passport containing a<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/right-of-abode\/apply-for-a-certificate-of-entitlement\">certificate of entitlement<\/a> <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How much does a UK ETA cost and how long is it valid for?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cost:<\/strong> \u00a316 (~A$32) per application (paid online)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Validity:<\/strong> Up to <strong>2 years<\/strong>, or until your passport expires<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Entries:<\/strong> Multiple trips allowed during the validity period<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Length of stay:<\/strong> Up to<strong> 6 months <\/strong>per visit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you renew your passport, you\u2019ll need to apply for a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do Australians apply for an ETA?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are only <strong>two official ways<\/strong> to apply for a UK ETA:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Online via<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/eta\">GOV.UK<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Via the official<strong> UK ETA mobile app<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the UK Government&#8217;s official guide, most ETA applications are processed quickly (usually within a day), but you&#8217;re recommended to apply <strong>at least a few days before travel<\/strong> in case additional checks are required.
